Notes for HOSEA BALLOU PHILLIPS:
According to an article in the Ellsworth American when Hose B. Phillips died, the first Phillips in the area, with a pack and axe on his back, swam across what is now Lake Lucerne and built a cabin where the Lucerne-in-Maine clubhouse stood in 1933. Old citizens called the lake "Phillips Lake."
Maude and Perle were children when Hosea and his wife first arrived in Ellsworth, driving a couple of well fed cows. They went to live in a house that became later the Ellsworth Inn. Hosea (also known as "Hosie") traded the cows for a load of Aroostook potatoes that he took to the coast and swapped for a boat.
For many years after he was famous as a trader, dealing in beef, cows "on the hoof," boats, potatoes, and about anything else the countryside had to trade. It was not unusual for his neighbors to awake at early dawn and find the picket fence enclosure surrounding his house filled with a variety of cattle when it had been empty the previous night. Working while others slept soon made him one of the most prosperous citizens of the community. He was a farmer as well as a trader, and raised potatoes himself.
Many years later he and his family moved to a finer house in Ellsworth and "Hosie"became a well known figure, wearing his trademark black top hat.
Notes for ELIZABETH JANE HAYNES:
She was a teacher and famous for her keen mind and knowledge of world affairs, according to her grandson Phillips Haynes Lord. She is buried in Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth.
