Doty, W. J., et al. (1940). THE HISTORIC ANNALS OF SOUTHWESTERN NEW YORK.
NYC: Lewis Historical Publishing Company, Inc. Vol II, p 620: "The next
generation (of political leaders) includes...Fay P. Greene of Franklinville."

To place this in perspective, the section begins, on page 608, with a history of
political leaders. Towards the end (p 619), it's stated, "In the Democratic
party probably the most talked of man a half century and more ago was Hon.
Charles S Cary, of Olean....Other Democratic leaders at that time were Rodney R
Crowley....The next generation includes...Fay P. Greene of Franklinville."

Fay Perry Greene built a home made of stone at 1703 Ames Street in Winfield Kansas during the late 1930 s. He built it with no architect. He & I went out through the countryside & collected the stones. A part of a steel bridge girder was used to support part of the ceiling of the large living room. I helped a lot & painted the whole house. He had some manual labor help to carry stones, cement, etc. My dad did 95% of it. He started working on it to the best of my recollection about a year after I graduated from high school (1935). I think my parents moved into it from the 10th Street house after I left for medical school (1938). (From: Remembrances of Fay Perry Greene, Jr.)

From Remembrances of Fay Perry Greene, Jr.

When we first arrived in Winfield(Kansas) we stayed at a boarding house. It was rough. My father had to work 12 hours a day--frequently on a night shift & had to get some rest in the daytime. Then my mother almost died of a ruptured appendix. I was on my own in 5th grade. Used to sneak up the hospital fire-escape to visit my mother. The nurses were kind to me. My mother was in the hospital for 3 or 4 weeks. The boardinghouse landlady was a very cold person--didn't like her at all. My mother's ?2nd cousin, Dr. Ralph Ward James operated on her.

Scores of friends will be interested in the following account from the Olean Evening Times of Monday last:

The marriage of Miss Edith Mary Riley, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Millard F. Riley, Sr. to Fay P. Greene of Franklinville was solemnized Saturday afternoon at 5 o’clock at the home of the bride’s parents on East State Street.

The ceremony was performed by Rev. Clarence Dibble of Duke Center, a cousin of the bride, before an embankment of palms, ferns, and pink hydrangeas in the presence of the immediate members of the families and a few friends. There were no attendants.

The bride was attired in her traveling suit of dark blue with hat to match and she wore a corsage bouquet of orchids and lilies of the valley.

Directly following the ceremony, a wedding dinner was served to the 30 guests, covers being laid for 12 at the bride’s table, which was centered with a shepherdess basket of Ophelia roses and ferns. The same flowers were used at the small tables and in decorating throughout the house.
