      12. Solomon Curtis Riley, born 1811 in Pennsylvania or New York (Source: Based on 1855, 1860 census records); died May 26, 1872 in Portland, Chautauqua Co, NY (Source: Probate records of Portland, NY. His gravestone says 1871.). He was the son of 25. Anna (probably) Riley. He married 13. Sarah Newhouse June 21, 1835 in New York (Source: Genealogical Publishers CD of NY Marriages, Reference not provided.).

      13. Sarah Newhouse, born 1816 in New York City, New York; died 1884 in Portland, Chautauqua Co, NY. She was the daughter of 26. John Newhouse and 27. Sarah Whelp.

Notes for Solomon Curtis Riley:
Numerous Records sometimes refer to Solomon as Salmon. His middle name was apparently Curtis.

Solomon's mother may be Anna Riley, of Portland NY. She sold land to Solomon in 1842 in Portland, and is enumerated in the 1850 NY census in Portland. She was later from Westmoreland, Oneida Co., NY.

CENSUS RECORDS:

1850 - Solomon Riley is not found in the Federal Census for NY, either in the Index or in Chautauqua County, even though History of Portland shows him as having a grocery concern there in 1845.

US Census for 1880

No Solomon C. Riley was found in the 1880 census. It is assumed he died between 1870 and 1880. (See further research re: his grave site in Portland, NY. Also, his wife Sarah is enumerated in the 1880 census with her sons John and Curtis.

===============================

Death Certificate of Solomon's son, Millard Fillmore Riley, (1927) shows that Millard's parents were Solomon C. Riley and Sarah Newhouse, and that both were born in London, England. The informant was Millard's son, Millard Fillmore Riley Jr. It is assumed that Millard was in error re: the birth places of Solomon and Sarah, given the census records information.

Death Certificate of Solomon's son Addison, (died 1923 in Portland) says that Solomon was born in Ireland. Informant was a Mrs. Fay.

Death Certificate of Solomon's son Curtis states Solomon was born in NY.
Death Certificate of Solomon's daughter Sarah states Solomon was born in Ireland.

Two census records state Solomon was born in Pennsylvania and two census records state he was born in NY.

Land Deed:
1839 - April 2 - Anna Riley, widow of New York City, purchased land from Wandiel (?) B. Bartholomew and Mancevia or Manervia (?), his wife, a parcel that had been part of the Holland Land Purchase.
1840 - August 15. - "Salmon" C. Riley "of the city of New York", purchased land in Portland in 1850 from John A. and Nancy Showerman (hard to read), who was also apparently the Clerk of Deeds ,
1842 July 2 - "Salmon" C. Riley of the City of New York sold land to in Portland -Anna Riley, widow, of the town of Portland 1850
1850 - March 4 - Curtis Wilbur and wife Martha sold land in Portland to Anna Riley, of the Town of Westmoreland of the County of Oneida NY
There is an Anna Riley listed in the 1850 census for Portland, Chautauqua County, NY. She is apparently staying at an inn in Portland, as the head of the household is an Innkeeper - she is aged 70 according to the census record, and it shows her as being born in Scotland. However, just above her name there are other inn guests who are shown as being born in Scotland, so it is possible the census taker just assumed everyone there was from Scotland. In 1850, Anna Riley sold land to a Curtis Wilber or Wilbur and his wife Martha. The land record shows she was a widow, from the town of Westmoreland, Oneida County NY. In the census, Curtis is living just a few doors away from the inn. Anna Riley originally bought land through the Holland Land Company in Portland in 1839.

This family appears to have many connections in Brooklyn. In checking the 1840 NY census index, it shows an Issac H. Wands also in Brooklyn. It is possible that Isaac Wands, a grocer, and Solomon Riley, a merchant knew each other - and must have been in close enough proximity to each other for their daughter (Martha Wands) and son (Millard F. Riley Sr.) to meet.

Document:
Estate of Salmon C. Riley, deceased.
At a Surrogates Court, held at Mayville in and for the County of Chautauqua, this 19th day of June 1872. Before Honorable G. Maples. Surrogate of said County. On the day and at the place aforesaid, Sarah Riley of the town of Portland in said county, appeared and presented a petition that letters of administration of the goods, chattels, and credits of Salmon C. Riley late of the town of Portland in said county, deceased, to be granted to the said petitioner.

Whereupon it was proved to the satisfaction of the said Surrogate, that the said deceased, at the time of his death, was a resident of Portland, in the county of Chautauqua. That he died at the town of Portland in the county of Chautauqua on the 26th day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-two, and that he left no last will and testament, according to the knowledge and belief of the said petitioner; and that the said petitioner has no doubt that the said deceased died intestate, and that the probable value of the personal estate of the said deceased is about thirteen hundred dollars, and that the said petitioner is widow of the said deceased, and that he left the following kindred entitled to his estate, to wit:

Sarah Riley (Widow)
John Riley
Ann Eliza Barringer
Redmond Riley
Sarah
Curtis Riley
Abram Riley
Addison Riley
all of Portland, Chautauqua County, NY, and
Millard F. Riley of Olean, Cattaraugus Co., NY

(Note by Laura Greene: I have in my possession a death announcement for a George Barringer:
"DIED - at the residence of G. S. James, in Sigourney, Iowa, on Thursday March 30, 1882, GEORGE BARRINGER, aged 23 years, 2 months, and 5 days. Brief funeral services at 3 PM Conducted by Rev. M. Bamford. Burial at Brocton, NY." It is unknown what relationship George Barringer had to Ann Eliza Barringer identified in Solomon's probate record, but the fact that this death announcement was kept in our family records supports a connection of some kind.
In addition - all heirs listed in Solomon's probate record are listed in earlier census records with him, except for the name, Ann Eliza, presumably the daughter of Solomon (since all the other heirs listed were his children) The probate record does not identify the name Christianna, found in his earlier census records - it is unknown at this time if Ann Eliza and Christianna were one and the same person. Since the earliest census record found for Solomon is in 1855, Ann Eliza is possibly already married and out of his home.

  v.   Christiana Riley, born Abt. 1844 in New York City, New York (Source: 1855 NY State census record).
  Notes for Christiana Riley:
1880 US Census records for Christiana Riley.

She is shown as head of this family with no spouse. It is unknown if she ever married, was widowed, or divorced.

Christiana Riley, age 32, born New York. Census records show her living in Brooklyn on Dekalb Avenue.
Children:
Sarah E. Riley , daughter, age 12
John H., Riley, son, age 6
George F , son, age 3

It is assumed that Christiana is the daughter of Solomon Riley, since she is enumerated in the 1860 census with him at age 16. (That census would place her birth year at around 1843/4, whereas the above census of 1800 places her birth year of 1847/8.) It is possible this discrepancy was simply a census taker error.

  Notes for Abram W. Riley:
From talks with Dr. Fay Perry Greene, born 1918, grand nephew of Abram:
1996

"We visited him in Westfield several times when I was very young. I called him Uncle Abram. Of course he was my great uncle. His wife was named Fanny. I don't know her maiden name. They lived in a white frame house which intrigued me at the time because of its length. A portion of it was used to store a winter's supply of firewood. They lived on a farm outside of Westfield, & raised delicious peaches, pears, plums, cherries, etc. T hey had many rows of grape vines on the farm--concord grapes. Maybe they made wine before prohibition. Also, they had no running water in the farmhouse. They had a well with a hand pump in the kitchen. I remember their having to prime the pump. Their only source of fuel for heat & cooking was wood & coal."

" I believe my mother attended his funeral. I assume he must have been buried in Westfield. I don't know what happened to Aunt Fanny, or if there were any children,or whether Abram had other brothers or sisters. "

=========================================

According to Portland Town Clerk Pat Kurtz (on June 9th, 1997) there is a tombstone record in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, of Abram Riley, died April 10, 1937, age 88 years. Buried with Fanny Riley (October 22, 1932) and Addison C. Riley, who died Jan 19, 1923.
===========================================

Notes of great granddaughter of Abram, Katherine Riley Lawson of Mayville, NY (daughter of John Addison Riley) given January 24, 1998:
"I was always told that John and his brother William were actually half brothers and that Abram had been married twice.
I also remember visiting Abram. The trolley went right by the front of his house, and I always had to stay in the backyard to be safe! Abram's house is still standing today. A Veterinarian purchased the property and he turned the barn into a large kennel. He rents out the house to someone."

According to Katherine Riley Lawson's grandmother's "Birthday Book", Abram died April 8, 1937, not April 10, as is on his tombstone, and Fanny died October 20, 1932, not October 22, as if on her tombstone.

  Notes for Fanny Armstrong:
Evergreen Cemetery Records for Portland, NY: Fanny Riley, died October 22, 1932, age 82yrs. Buried next to Abram Riley, who was her husband. Age could be incorrect if census records were accurate.
