Notes for Mercy Putman: A record of deaths kept by James Fay in my possession shows a different death date than that on her gravestone. She is buried along side her husband Allen in Sardinia Cemetery, NY. She used the first name of Mercy on legal documents, including land records. Census records show that Mercy was born in 1780, which is probably correct, given the Dutch record of her parents marriage of 1779. Mercy was baptized May 10, 1780 at the Dutch Reformed Church of Stone Arabia in New York. (Church Records) ========== In 1860, Mercy, having lost Allen the year before, lived with the LONG family. The household in Sardinia consisted of: MARY A. LONG, age 33, widow, born in NY MARY A. LONG, age 8, born in NY WILLIE G. LONG, age 2, born in NY MERCY GREEN, age 80, widow, born in NY Next door to them was a HOPKIN or HOPKINS family, and on the other side a NOTT or MOTT family |

Notes for Charles Lamoni Green: According to Terry Moyer of the Morman Church in Salt Lake City Utah, a direct descendant of Charles Lamone Green: Charles became a Mormon in 1834, four years after the Church of the Latter Day Saints was founded by Joseph Smith. He would have been one of the early pioneers to head west, seeking along with other church members safety from prejudice. from "Echoes of the Sage and Cedars", Biographical Sketches: Pages 337-338 Submitted by Arvetta "Etta" Mecham Bishop "Charles Lamoni Green, son of Allen and Mercy Putman Green, was born 4th July 1802 in Otsego County, NY. He was married to Mary Emmoliza Ellis at Canajoharie, NY about 1826. Chalres was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints 7th March. 1834 and soon after was ordained an elder. Later he was given the responsibility of organizing the elders in that part of New York. Charles and his wife migrated west because their records were listed with the Saints at Nauvoo in 1846; they were endowed 2nd Frebruary in the Nauvoo Temple. They arrived in Utah with the Heber C. Kimball Company in 1848. They were in the Little Cottonwood Ward a short time, then moved to Tooele, Utah. In the 1851 census they were listed at Nephi, Utah. One of the members of the family has stated that this family was called from Oak Creek to go to Deseret to help build the "Old Mud Fort" in 1865. This is logical in that they ranched in the canyon. Charles' wife Mary died a short time after the fort was finished and was buried in an unmarked grave just north of the fort. It was necessary to do this so that the Indians could not find and molest the graves of the white settlers. Charles married Sarah Jane Warren 17 October 1870, in the Endowment House, Salt Lake City Utah. It is known that their first child, Charles, was born at Oak City in 1873. The other two children, Lyman Allen and Mary Ann, were born in Rabbit Valley, Wayne County, Utah. Charles Green died 25 December 1879 in Rabbit Valley." ------------------------ |

Interred in Wibraham (cemetery not named.) Notes by Laura Greene, May 25, 1999: I have been following up on John Parker's work - he found two land records between Job W. (Middle initial appears to have been M., but possibly W.) Robert E., 3/12 months, b. in Mass. The Ancestral File shows a Job W. Greene marrying an Abigail Mann, dau of John Mann and Sally Lathrop of Mass. Birth year of Abigail Mann Greene - 1833. (Making the Abigail in the 1860 census above the right age for this Abigail Mann - depending on what month the census was taken.) I pulled up the the census for 10 years earlier - the 1850 census record for a JOB W. GREENE living in Middlefield, Hampshire Co., Mass. And Surprise surprise......Job Greene is a 25 year old laborer, born in NY, living right next door to a JOHN and SALLY MANN, with children Abigail and and Renselaer Mann. Abigail is 19 in this 1850 census. I did some more research on Braintree, Vt. and found Job Greene referenced a couple of times: FROM: "The History of Braintree, Vermont: A Memorial of Families that have Resided in Town. by Boyce Bass, pub 1883 (Most of the early settlers were from Braintree, Mass) Page 96 The following are names of the principal officers in Braintree from the date of its organization: SELECTMEN: JOB W. (Note: I believe this book made a printing error, and placed info that actually belongs to Job with the fellow in the list above Job. I also don't know if the April 29 1864 death date is actually Job's or another man, given what I believe to be a printing error. Above Job's name is the name Wallace Goodspeed, and they show him as Lt., resigned April 1, 1863. These are actually Job Green's statistics, based on the reference below: FROM: "REVISED ROSTER OF VERMONT VOLUNTEERS", pub 1892 Page 324 JOB GREEN - 1st Lt., Regiment 8, Company G Date of Commission: Jan 7, 1862 Taken Prisoner Sept 4, 1862. Paroled Nov 13, 1862. Resigned from service April 1, 1863. (No notice about his death). There are several other family names of interest in this book on Braintree, who may or may not be connected with the families we know to be ours: CLEVELAND, GOODSPEED, FRENCH, SPEAR, ELLIS, NICHOLS One other tidbit of note: In the Vermont soldiers' book, one of Job's fellow Lieutenants from Braintree was a man named JAMES WELCH. It made me wonder about the Ellen Welch living with Allen and Mercy that we found in 1855 - but thus far there is absolutely nothing to make a connection between this James and Ellen. =========== Civil War Pension Record of Job William Greene (Widow's Pension for Abigail) Please note history of the residences for Abigail Mann Green's place of residence: In July of 1890 her post office is given as South Hadley Falls, Hampshire Co. Examining Surgeon's Certificate - June 23, 1863 I hereby certify that I have carefully examined Job W. Green, late a Lieutenant in company G, 8th Regiment, Vermont Volunteers in the service of the United States, who was discharged in New Orleans, LA on the 1st day of April 1863 and is an applicant for an invalid pension, alleged disability resulting from partial loss of motion of right leg and arm. In my opinion the said Job W. Green is totally incapacitated for obtaining his subsistence by manual labor from the cause above stated. Judging from his present condition, and from the evidence before me, it is my belief that the said disability originated in the service aforesaid in the line of duty. The disability is probably never will fully recover. A more particular description of the applicant's condition is subjoined. Applicant, has partial paralysis of right leg and hip and is in sequence partial atrophy of muscles of these parts. Muscular disease undoubtedly caused by Phlebitis occuring during a severe attack of Typhoid Fever - disability arises from loss of ? of motion possibility will recover in 18 to 24 months, though very doubtful.
