  Notes for John Pollard Gaines:
Notes on John P. Gaines from . Turnbull, George S. Governors of Oregon. Binfords & Mort, Publishers, Portland, Or 1959.

Governor 1850 - 1853

Governor Joe Lane's successor, Gen. John P. Gaines, spent a most
tragic three years as Governor of Oregon Territory Born in
Kentucky in 1795. He had served in both the War of 1812 and the
Mexican War and was a Whig supporter of President Taylor. He
sailed for Oregon on the U. S. store ship Supply and arrived in San
Francisco in July, 1850. His two beautiful daughters had died of
yellow fever on the way. Then his wife was killed in a fall from a
horse in Salem, and his son, Kichard, died soon afterward.

Meanwhile his political days were far from happy. His Democratic Legislature was hostile to the
new Whig Governor. Gaines, described as an austere, somewhat pompous type, rubbed the
rough westerners the wrong way, and he could get virtually no co-operation toward making a
success of his governorship.

At a public meeting in Portland it was "belligerently declared," as The Oregonian said, that there
were "many respectable individuals in Oregon capable of filling any office under the territorial
government."

Governor Gaines favored keeping the seat of the government at Oregon City. This drew fire as
just another unwise stand by a foreigner who didn't know Oregon. Personalities were bitter, and
on one occasion these resulted in a physical assault by the Governor on Asahel Bush, strongly
partisan editor of the Oregon Statesman and outspoken critic. of Governor Gaines.

A man of personal integrity, good appearance, well-intentioned, Gaines suffered both from
unwise advice and from the superheated partisanship of the day. The only friendly voice was
that of T. J. Dryer's Whig organ, The Oregonian. His administration produced nothing especially
noteworthy. He was defeated for Congress by General Lane in 1855.

In spite of all the political trouble and personal tragedy attending his Oregon expedition,
Governor Gaines remained in the territory. He remarried 15 months after his first wife's death
and lived out his life in Salem. He died Dec. 9, 1857.
