Charles Green(e) and 65. Elenor. He married 33. Sarah Johnson Bef. 1776 in Probably RI.

      33. Sarah Johnson (Source: Johnson Family by Linda Matthews.FTW, Date of Import: Jun 11, 1999.), born September 16, 1753 in Mishnock, Kent, Rhode Island (Source: Arnold's Vital Records); died Bef. 1793 in Probably Rhode Island (Source: Will of Obediah Johnson, 1793, does not name Sarah..). She was the daughter of 66. Obadiah Johnson and 67. Sarah Nichols.

Notes for Job Greene:
There is some confusion as to whether or not Job Greene is the father of Allen Madison Green Sr through a possible first marriage to Sarah Johnson, dau of Obadiah and Sarah Johnson of Coventry RI. Allen's first son was named Charles Lamoni Green, and Etta Bishop, Charles' descendant conducted research on this family for 25 years. Charles was an early Mormon pioneer and became a Morman priest, and was recorded as saying that his grandfather's name was Jacob Green(e). However, no Jacob has ever been located in Rhode Island that could be the father of Allen and it is believed that the meeting recorder perhaps mistranscribed his notes, writing Jacob for Job. Etta, hired several professional genealogists in the 1970s, including the well known Charles Farnham of the Rhode Island Historical Society. Mr. Farnham theorized that the father of Allen Green and his sister Elenor, was actually Job Green, born 1751 in RI. , son of Charles Green(e), born 1729 in RI and his first wife Elenor , given the naming patterns of Allen's children.

A Job Greene was found in the Rhode Island State Census Records of 1782, living a few houses down from Obadiah Johnson, father of Sarah Johnson. Census records show 1 son under 16 and 1 daughter under 16 (Allen and Elenor?) Obadiah Johnson identified an Allen Greene and Elenor Greene as his grandchildren in his will of 1791..no parents identified. The only daughter who could have married Jacob or Job Greene is Sarah Johnson, and she isapparently deceased by the time Obadiah's will was written in 1791. In addition, there are several town council records for Coventry RI showing Job Greene, son of Charles, and Obediah Johnson voting by proxy together for various township issues, indicating a close relationship of some sort.

The naming patterns of Allen's children:

1st son - Charles (if Allen was Job's son, Allen's grandfather's name was Charles)
2nd son -Job (this Job must have died young as Allen named a second son Job)
3rd son - Job II
another son - Obadiah (after his maternal grandfather Obadiah Johnson?)
another son - Allen Madison
another son - Perry
Daughters: Sarah (name of Allen's grandmother), Mary (name of Job's step mother), Elenor (name of Job's mother as well as Allen's sister), Clarinda, Betsey

Much of Job Green/e's (1751) family came to western New York, as did Allen. Mercy Putman Green's sister, Catherine, married Giles Briggs, a cousin of Job Greene of Charles (Job's father Charles and Giles mother Abigail Greene were first cousins). The master computer of the LDS Family History Center in Salt Lake City has now automatically merged the two records for Jacob and Job Greene into one for the newest version of Ancestral File (1996). It is unknown why the computer has merged these two records.

Abstract of a Pension Record for Job Green, born Dec. 1751:

JOB GREENE, or JOB Green
S13194, Rhode Island line
Soldier was born December of 1751 at Warwick RI and he lived at Coventry RI
at enlistment and he lived there a number of years after the war, then moved to
Petersburg, New York and in 1822 moved to Brunswick New York (both in
Rensselaer Co. NY) and he applied there 9 aug 1832, soldier died 17 January
1838, a son Job Green was living at Brunswick NY in 1857, in 1832 a John
Green of Berlin NY knew soldier well and had served with him, in 1857 an
Orlando J. Green was of Rensselaer Co. NY but no relationship was stated.

Job Greene, born December, 1751, was son of Charles Greene, born 1729 in RI, and Elenor , according to Rhode Island Historian Charles Farnham. A cemetery record was found in the RI Maples Cemetery showing Elenor, wife of Charles,, died 1757 - buried near Rebecca Cahoon, mother of Charles. Charles married (2nd) Mary ?. There is variation in the historians' reports of children of Charles :

White Church Cemetery Record in Brunswick, Rens. Co. NY:

Job Green, died Jan 10, 1838, age 87 yr. Husband of Anna Green who died 1831.
(According to court records Job died on Jan 17, not Jan 10.)

Job Greene is identified as Lt. Job Greene of the Continental Army.

Job Green applied for Revolutionary War pension in 1832, at which time men named Allen Matteson (son of Job Matteson), Rufus Johnson, and John Greene, all who knew Job since childhood, gave testimony. (Note by L. Green: Possibly Job named a son after this Allen Matteson?)

In 1838, upon Job's death, Job's sons Job Jr. and Johnson Greene gave testimony (living in Brunswick) that they were the only surviving heirs to receive Job's final pension payment. It is important to note that Allen, if he were their half brother, would have been long gone into the frontier of western NY (by 1800), and Job and Johnson Green would have probably had no knowledge of Allen's whereabouts.
In the probate court after Job's 1838 death, Job Jr. claimed to be the only surviving heir (Johnson had assigned Job Jr. power of attorney) This was later contested by a Walter Burlingame who was guardian of the grandchildren (children of Job's daughter, unnamed) of Job Greene Sr..

Transcribed document of this court action declaring Job and his brother Johnson as the only living heirs:

New York, county of Rensselaer - I, Henry R. Bristol, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Said County (the same being a Court of Record) do hereby certify that at a Circuit Court held in and for the said County before the Judge thereof at the City of Troy on the 19th day of March 1838 it was proved by the adduction of testimony satisfactory to the said Court that Job Green late of the town of Brunswick in said County died on the 17th day of January 1838. That at the time of his death he was a Pensioner of the United States under the act of Jun 7th, 1832 and that he left no widow him surviving. But left Job Green and Johnson Green his children and heirs at law him surviving and the only children and heirs at law of the said Job Green deceased who are still living - and that said Job Green and Johnson Green heirs as aforesaid both reside in the town of Brunswick aforesaid are both of age.

      In testimony there of I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed the Seal of said County this 29th day of March AD 1838. Henry R. Bristol, Clerk

(Note: Johnson Green assigned power of attorney to his brother Job so that Job would receive the final pension payment.

Job Greene Sr. had a daughter who married a ? Crandall. This Mr. Crandall was the brother of Bethany Crandall, who married Walter P. Burlingame. Walter (and subsequently his son Alexis Burlingame) apparently had custody of two of the three Crandall children of this union, so Job's daughter and her husband must have died sometime during 1838 (year of Job's death). Upon Job's death, Walter Burlingame petitioned the court to recognize the Crandall children as grandchildren of Job Greene to be eligible as heirs, and requested that the court cite Job Greene Jr. for stating he was the only living heir.. The following is the court document of this petition:

"The petition of Walter P. Burlingame and Alexis Burlingame of the town of Trenton in the county of Oneida, respectfully represents Job Green late of the town of Brunswick in the county of Rensselaer, deceased, died a natural death on or about the ninth day of January 1838 at the town of Brunswick in said county, which was the place of his residence at the time of his death; that the said deceased died intestate, according to the best knowledge and belief of your petitioner and that no last will or testament of the said deceased has been found or discovered. And your petitioner further represents that the said deceased while living and at the time of his death, was possessed of goods, chattels and credits within the State of New York; and that the value of the goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased at the time of his death was about the sum of eighteen hundred dollars, according to the best judgment and belief of your petitioner that the deceased left no widow and only one child now living Viz Job
Green who resides in the town of Brunswick aforesaid. The deceased also left three grandchildren, Viz Maria Crandall & John T. Crandall and the name of the third is unknown to your petitioner of whom are minors and that your petitioner the said Alexis Burlingame is the cousin of the said minors and has in due form of law been appointed and still is the guardian of the said John T. Crandall. Your petitioner therefore prays that a citation may be ---- to the said Job Green & assign him to appear & take out letters of administration on the estate of the said deceased. Know that in default of his appearance to claim such letters Your petitioner prays that letters of administration of the goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased may be granted to your petitioner by the Surrogate of the county of Rensselaer aforesaid, according to the form of the Statutes of the State of New-York, in such cased made and provided. Dated June 11th 1839.

(Note: Walter Burlingame's petition notes "only one child now living" of Job's children. It is not known if this means Johnson Greene, Job Jr.'s brother, died, or if because Johnson signed over power of attorney to Job Jr. the year before, Job Jr. was considered the only living heir.)

"Voted that Job Green son of Charles be allowed his account the amount there

In a 1795 land deed for Job Greene, it states Job Greene of Coventry, indicating he did not move to New York until after 1795.

Job Green served in the battle of Sullivan's Expedition in NY. This Expedition utilized regiments from other states and took place in the Otsego County area, where Allen Greene later lived.
From Revolutionary War Pension Record:

While residing in Coventry, Kent County, Rhode Island, Job Greene served with the Rhode Island troops, as follows:

From May 1, 1775, eight months as corporal and orderly sergeant in Captain Edmund Johnson’s company, Colonel James M. Varnum’s regiment in the summer and fall of 1776, two months as ensign in Captain William Roy’s company, Colonel Archibald Kasson’s regiment; he was commissioned, January 23, 1777, 2nd lieutenant, and served in Captain Malachi Rammett’s company, Colonel Joseph Stanton’s regiment, length of service 15 months; in the summer or fall of 1778, two weeks as adjutant in Captain Abel Bennett’s company, Colonel Archibald Kasson’s regiment, and was in General Sullivan’s Expedition; the summer following, one month adjutant in Captain Abel Bennet’s company, Colonel Archibald Kasson’s regiment.

Notes for Sarah Johnson:
Sarah Johnson is identified in a manuscript written by Anthony Tarbox Briggs, who provided a great deal of information about Rhode Island Families, as the daughter of Obadiah Johnson. Her death and marriage records have never been located, but Briggs manuscript states she would have been deceased at the time of her father Obadiah Johnson's death in 1793. Obadiah Johnson identifies Allen Greene and Elinor Greene as his grandchildren in his will.

Children of Job Greene and Sarah Johnson are:

	16	i.		Allen Green, born May 3, 1776 in Rhode Island; died September 11, 1859 in Sardinia, Erie, New York; married Mercy Putman Abt. 1801 in Probaby Otsego, Montgomery Co. NY.
		ii.		Elenor Green, born Unknown (Source: The name of Elenor Green is in the will of Obadiah Johnson, (father of Jacob/Job's wife Sarah Johnson) as a grandaughter .).

Notes for Elenor Green:
(Will of Obadiah Johnson, whose daughter Sarah was mother to Allen, identifies another grandchild as Elenor Green, so it is assumed she must be Allen's sister.)
