Wans Surname: (Notes provided by Larry House of Glenmont, New York)
William Wans was reidare at Loncaster 1574 and Robert Wands appears in Belhaven 1688. Wanns were described as hereditary doomsters of the bishop of St. Andrews’ Court of Regality. Pg 801 George F. Black The Surnames of Scotland: Their Origin, Meaning and History, 1946, The New York Public Library, N.Y.

The stories say that three brothers (?), two brothers and one cousin or three cousins (?) served in the British Army during the French and Indian War. After the war they received land grants (from the king in one account) and walked to the area of what became the Towns of Watervliet/ Bethlehem/New Scotland from Canada (?). If the experience of the following two Scottish Highlander Regiments [I don’t know if the Wands were Highlanders] is used as an example then the concept of land grants occurred.

The 77th (Montgomery’s Highlanders) and 78th (Fraser’s Highlanders) Regiments were both raised in 1757 and disbanded in 1763. After the termination of fighting in 1763, the officers and men of the 77th, being in New York, were given a choice of either staying in America and receiving a land grant in proportion to their rank or returning to Scotland. The same occurred for the 78th, which was in Canada, at the end of the war. When war broke out between Great Britain and the colonies, a number of men from the old 77th and 78th Regiments enlisted in the 84th or Royal Regiment of Highland Emigrants.
