  Notes for Elenor:
Maples Cemetery Record shows "Mrs. Elenor Green, wife of Charles, died 1757. Approximately 35 years old. " She is buried near Rebekah Cahoon Green, mother of Charles. It has been assumed by previous historians of the late 1800s that Charles was married to a Mary ?.....however, this cemetery record strongly suggests that Mary was actually the second wife to Charles, and therefore Elenor was mother to Job, born 1751.

EARLY HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF MILFORD & OTHER PARTS OF OTSEGO CO,., BY EZRA
STEVENS:

SOME TIME BEFORE THE REVOLUTION PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT LOCALITIES WERE
MIGRATING TO THE WILDS OF OTSEGO CO. IN ORDER TO BETTER THEIR PECUNIARY CIR-
CUMSTANCES. A LARGE PERCENTAGE CAME FROM THE MOHAWK RIVER.
AMONG THOSE WERE THE FERGUSON FAMILY, WHO CAME BY WAY OF CHERRY VALLEY TO
THE SUSQUEHANNA. THE FERGUSON FAMILY, WERE ON THEIR WAY TO THE OTEGO VALLEY.
THEY WERE DESCENDING THE RIVER IN CANOES WHEN A LITTLE BELOW PORTANDVILLE, MRS.
FERGUSON & HER SISTER & A NURSING BABY INFANT WERE ACCIDENTLY DROWNED BY THE
UPSETTING OF A CANOE. A STRENUOUS EFFORT WAS MADE TO RESCUE THEM BUT BEFORE
THEY WERE RESCUED LIFE HAD BECOME EXTINCT.
THIS AWFUL TRAGEDY CAST A GLOOM OVER THE WHOLE PARTY, FOR A LONG TIME.
WILLIAM FERGUSON THE FATHER OF THOMAS AND JAMES, FIRST LOCATED AT CHERRY
VALLEY & FROM THERE HE LEFT FOR THE OTEGO CREEK TO MAKE A PERMANENT SETTLEMENT.
HE EMBARKED WITH CANOES DOWN THE CHERRY VALLEY TO THE RIVER AND DOWN THE RIVER
TO THE MOUTH OF THE OTEGO CREEK, & THEN UP THE CREEK TO THE FARM WHICH IS NOW
OCCUPIED BY HIS GREAT-GRAND CHILDREN.
WILLIAM FERGUSON AND FAMILY, HIS WIFE AND HIS WIFE'S SISTER & SOME OTHER
MEMBERS OF THE FERGUSON FAMILY WERE ALL IN THE COMPANY.
MRS. FERGUSON AND SISTER HAD CHANGED BABIES FOR SOME CAUSE AND WHEN THIS
UNEXPECTED CATASTROPHE OCCURRED MRS. FERGUSONS BABY WAS WITH HER SISTER & HER
BABY WAS SAVED AND HER SISTER'S BABY WAS LOST. MRS FERGUSON'S BABY WAS NAMED
THOMAS. THE LATE THOMAS FERGUSON, WHO DIED 16 MAR 1864 AGED 95 YRS. POLLY HIS
WIFE DIED 8 JUN 1854 AE 82 YRS.

THIS ACCIDENT OCCURRED IN APRIL 1771, JUST PRIOR TO THE REVOLUTION. AFTER
THEY HAD LOCATED THEY WERE SOON COMPELLED TO RETURN TO CHERRY VALLEY & FROM
THERE TO MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TILL AFTER THE WAR HAD CLOSED. THEN THEY RETURNED
TO THE OTEGO VALLEY, TO THEIR WILDERNESS HOME.
HISTORY OF LAURENS TOWNSHIP BY BERNICE WARDELL: P15 CHERRY VALLEY MASSACRE
11 NOV 1778, WILLIAM FERGUSON PREVIOUSLY LIVED IN CHERRY VALLEY, AND HE TOOK HIS
FAMILY BACK THERE FOR PROTECTION. HIS WIFE HAD DROWNED DURING A CANOE ACCIDENT
WHEN THEY FIRST TRAVELED TO THE PATENT AND THE WAR CAUSED HIM TO SUFFER MORE
THAN ANY OTHER SETTLER ON THE OTEGO PATENT. HIS YOUNG SONS, THOMAS AND JAMES,
AND HIS DAUGHTERS POLLY, MERCY, AND SARAH, WITH HER INFANT, WERE TAKEN PRISONER
BY THE INDIANS. HIS DAUGHTER JANE WAS KILLED. LATER FERGUSON AND SARAH'S HUS-
BAND, A SOLDIER NAMED FORBES, MANAGED TO RANSOM ALL OF THEM, EXEC PT THOMAS.
SEVEN YEARS PASSED BEFORE THOMAS WAS LOCATED, A RANSOM PAID, AND HE WAS RETURNED
THE PRESENT TOWNSHIP OF LAURENS WAS PART OF OTSEGO TOWNSHIP IN 1790 WHEN
THE FIRST CENSUS OF 1790 LISTS THREE HUNDRED AND FOUR FAMILIES LIVING IN
OTSEGO TOWNSHIP. ONLY EIGHT CAN BE IDENTIFIED AS FAMILIES LIVING WITHIN THE
PRESENT BOUNDARY OF LAURENS TOWNSHIP. THEY WERE WILLIAM FERGUSON, A FAMILY OF

YEARS. FERGUSON BUILT A ONE STORY FRAME HOUSE EAST OF OTEGO CREEK, ONE AND ONE
HALF MILES BELOW SLEEPER'S SETTLEMENT, ON LAND NOW OWNED BY CARL GUS. HE USED
WOODED PEGS TO HOLD HIS ROOF SHINGLES IN PLACE BECAUSE NAILS WERE NOT AVAILABLE
IN THE WILDERNESS.P 22

IN 1800 RICHARD SMITH RETURNED TO PHILADELPHIA, NEVER AGAIN TO SEE SMITH
HALL. THE MAN WHO FIRST EXPLORED THE OTEGO COUNTRY IN 1769, NOW, IN 1801, CON-
VEYED PARTS OF GREAT LOT 44 TO HIS SON RICHARD, BENJAMIN BRIGHTMAN, CHARLES
MATTESON, JOSEPH MAYALL, GRIFFIN CRAFTS, DARIUS BOWEN, THOMAS FERGUSON, WILLIAM

JOSEPH GALLOWAY IN PHILADELPHIA, AND HE WAS CLERK OF THE ASSEMBLY OF NEW JERSEY
IN 1769. SMITH INTENDED TO FORM A QUAKER COLONY. HE INDIUCED SEVERAL PEOPLE,
WHO HAD THE NECESSARY SKILLS AND CHARACTER FOR PIONEERING, TO SETTLE ON THE
PATENT. JOSEPH MAYALL, WILLIAM FERGUSON, JOHN SLEEPER, NATHANIEL EDWARDS, JOHN
HARGROVE AND JOSEPH DEAN EACH RECEIVED ONE HUNDRED ACRES OF LAND AS A GIFT FOR
SETTLING ON THE PATENT. P 10-11 IN THE SPRING OF 1773, SMITH MADE A SECOND TRIP
TO THE OTEGO PATENT WITH JOSEPH DEAN, JAMES RUCROFT, JOHN HICKS, AND WILLIAM
HORNER. DEAN AND HORNER WERE EMPLOYED BY SMITH. THEY CLEARED GROUND FOR
SMITH'S HOUSE AND HELPED BUILD A ROAD TO OTSEGO LAKE. THE ROAD WORK WAS FINISH-
ED JULY FIRST, 1773.

ON JULY 10TH, THREE OF THE MEN WENT TO CHERRY VALLEY FOR FLOUR AND SALT,
CAMP SUPPLIES, SMITH'S TWO HORSES, AND LIVE-STOCK (SIX SHEEL AND FOUR OXEN),
THE FIRST LIVE-STOCK ON THE OTEGO PATENT.
TIME WAS NOT WASTED! THE CONSTRUCTION OF SMITH'S HOUSE BEGAN IMMEDIATELY,
JOHN NEWBERYY, A CARPENTER, AND JOHN BROWN, A SHINGLE AND LATHMAKER, HAD BEEN
HIRED IN CHERRY VALLEY. ON JULY 15TH FOUR MEN COMPLETED THE CELKLAR. THE NEXT
DAY THE MEN FELLED AND SQUARED WHITE PINE LOGS FOR THE FRAMEWORK. THE LUMBER
WAS CUT BY MEANS OF A PIT-SAW. THE SAW FOR THIS PRIMITIVE SAWMILL WAS BROUGHT
FROM CHERRY VALLEY ON A MAN'S BACK, PROBABLY BY WAY OF THE INDAIN TRAIL DOWN THE
SUSQUEHANNA AND OVER THE HILLS TO SMITH'S PLACE. THE HOUSE FRAMES, WERE RAISED
ON 17 JUL, AND THIS IMPORTANT EVENT WAS CELEBRATED AT THIS TIME BY DRINKING A
TOAST OF COLD SPRING WATER. THE MEN WITH SMITH AT THIS TIME WERE NATHANIEL
