Affidavit provided by Mrs. Mary Flinn for her mother Sarah Jane Daves' widow's pension application, Jan 1898.

Mrs. Mary Flinn, age 45 years; post office address, Cisco, Piatt Co. IL. Occupation: housekeeper

"I am the daughter of Mrs. Sarah J. Daves and the late William Daves, who was a member of Co. D, 116th Illinois Inf in the late war. My mother lives with me, and I take care of her. When my father died he left no will, and Mother only has a right of dower in his property, consisting of a house and lot where we now live, in Cisco, and a farm of 80 acres near here. Father left no other property, and there was no insurance on his life, and Mother had no property, or income, from any source before his death. Her sole income, now, is derived from the rent of the farm. She is very infirm, and entirely unable to work. We live in the house in Cisco, which therefor produces no income. It is worth about $400 but is only taxed at about $150, which is the usual proportion as to value at which property is assessed. The taxes per annum, amount to $6 or #7, insurance $4.50, and repairs $40 to $15. If the house was rented out it would rent for about $6 per month.
The farm is supposed to be worth about $60 an acre, and is rented to my brother Charles, for 2/5 of the grain, which is the rate at which most farms in the neighborhood are rented. I think her share of the corn crop for the last two years has been about 800 bushels each year, selling in 1896 at 22 cents a bushel, and in 1897 at 18 cents. No wheat is raised. The oat crop in 1897 brought her $65, and in 1896, $15. She also rents a pasture to my brother, Charles, at $4.00 an acre, I think, which amounts to about $25. Her taxes are over $30 and there are some repairs every year. There is no insurance. The farm is encumbered by a mortgage of $1500, given by Father and Mother in 1892, at 6 per cent interest, of which no part of the principal has been paid. Mother keeps up the interest, which is paid semi-annually. I think Mother's clear annual income after all expenses are paid will not exceed $25. Her children care for her, or she would have next to nothing to live on. Her arm and hip have been broken and she is wholly unable to do even the lightest work.

I have understood your questions and my answers are correctly recorded.
Mary Flinn, Deponent January 14, 1898.
