Joshua Cain appears in the records of Shenandoah County in 1782, when he purchased from Joh n Horn (Houghn) and wife Mary, a parcel of land containing 141 acres adjoining the lans of Wi lliam Harrell, James Miller and Michael Baker. The deed calls him "Joshua Cain of Frederick C ounty", implying that he was at that time a resident of Frederick County. It also appears tha t in 1779 Joshua had received in his own name a grant for 100 acres of land in Shenandoah Cou nty, although there seems to be no record to conform this grant.

Joshua's estate was settled in 1839 in Shenandoah County with Martin Doctor as his administra tor. Persons by the name of Cain buying at the sale were: Elander Cain, William Cain and Jame s Cain. Other familiar Fork names were among the buyers: Peter Funk, Gasper Shawl, Basil Ridg eway, Henry Haun, Luke Lovel;ess, John Merchant and Daniel Bowman.

Joshua"s son William acquired title to the plantation of his father as shown in a deed of tru st dated 9 December 1831. The 1837 Tax List of Warren County (formerly parts of Shenandoah an d Frederick Counties, formed 1836) credits 30 acres to Joshua Cain and 11 acres to William Ca in. William acquired title to the plantation of his father, as shown in a deed of trust date d 9 December 1831, which William and his wife Ann gave to Enoch Henry, trustee, to secure a n indebtedness to Martin Doctor. The conveyance shows that William Cain was entitled to six e qual shares, one share in his own right, and five shares by purchase ffrom his brothers and b rother-in-law. The land at that time was bounded by lands of Reuben French and William Ellsey . Another deed, made in Shenandoah County six days prior to the above mentioned trust, show s how three of Joshua's shares were acquired by William. John Doctor and Mahala, his wife an d Martin Doctor and Amelia (Cain), his wife, conveyed three shares of a tract of land, the la te residence of Joshua Cain, deceased, to William Cain. The deed shows that John Doctor and w ife held title by reason of having bought two shares from Robert McKay and Mary (Cain), and t hat Martin Doctor and Amelia (Cain) had one share, being the portion of Amelia's as one of th e daughters of Joshua Cain. It is not clear how Robert McKay and Mary (Cain) obtained the sec ond share.
