John Green was the fourth of seven sons of Robert Green who emigrated from Ireland in about 1710. Robert took up large tracts of land near what is now Brandy Station in what, in 1712, was Essex County; in 1721, Spotsylvania; in 1734, Orange; and, in 1749, Culpeper. He died there testate in 1748.

John was born in about 1730 and married Susanna Blackwell and they too had seven sons. The first two, William and John, went with their father as he took his company, raised in Culpeper County, to Williamsburg on 6 September 1775. William decided later on the Virginia Navy and became captain of Defiance on 6 December 1776. John, Jr.'s short military career precedes as a separate entry. John, the father, was promoted to major upon the resignation of Patrick Henry with a date of rank of 18 March 1776. He was present fit for duty as major on 5 October 1776. A wound was taken in a shoulder at Mamaroneck on 21 October where he was in command of the First on the field and the officer's return for 22 October listed him as wounded. He was in command again at the Battle of White Plains on 28 October and was absent sick on 5 November 1776. Promotion to lieutenant colonel came on 22 March 1777 with a date of rank of December 1776 to replace the deceased Lt Col. Eppes. Green was in command of the First at Brandywine. Promotion to colonel came with a date of rank of 26 January 1778 resulting in command of the Tenth Virginia on 31 January 1778. That regiment was incorporated with the Sixth Virginia on 14 September 1778 and he remained its colonel. The First Virginia was commanded by Col. Green at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse where it was held in reserve. The regiment consisted mostly of militia officers and eighteen months men recruited in the summer of 1780. Lt Col. Richard Campbell took command of that new First after the battle. Green's next venture was to march some 1,500 militiamen from Culpeper and Orange Courthouse to Williamsburg joining Muhlenberg's Brigade. They marched from there to Richmond, Manchester, and Petersburg. At the latter, on 25 April 1781, Muhlenberg was driven back by BGen. Arnold with the loss of nine wounded, seven of whom died the next day. John was declared redundant colonel number six on 27 December 1782. Col. Green died in Culpeper County in 1793. Land warrants were awarded as follows: 107 for 7,777 acres for service from 4 September 1775 to 1 February 1783; 1,111 acres for his eighth year of service on 1 June 1805; and 185 acres for two additional months on 12 February 1808 (M.
