William "The Elder" Green (son of Thomas Green and Elizabeth Newman)1 was born 1650 in "Greens Norton", Northampton, England, and died 1701 in France. He married Elenor Duff on 1673, daughter of Alexandar Duff and Helen Grant.

William Green of Northampton, England ("Green's Norton"), descended from the same ancestor as Sir Thomas Green, the father of Matilda Green who married Sir Thomas Parr. Matilda and Sir Thomas' daughter, Kathrine Parr, was the 6th wife of Henry VIII.

William Green married Eleanor Duff of the McDuff family of Scotland and was an officer in the bodyguard of William III, Prince of Orange (later named King William of England with wife Mary of "The Glorious Revolution" fame).

William Green, who married Eleanor Duff, was over 6 feet tall and served in the palace guard of William of Orange, a Dutch Prince, who married Mary, daughter of King James II of England. In 1688 William and Mary supplanted King James II who fled to France where he died in 1701. It is said that William Green was born at Green's Norton which was an ancient estate purchased in 1352 by Sir Henry Greene, the Lord Chief Justice of England. This information can be read in many books about the early GREENS of Virginia.
