I am researching the following surnames:Anderson, Gibson, Horton, Williams, Ross, Emerson and Smith.Anderson from Savannah, Georgia; Gibson from East Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Williams and Ross from Rodney, Mississippi; Emerson from Vicksburg, MIssissippi; Horton from Mound Bayou, Mississippi and Griggs from Letahatchie, Alabama. Should you locate any names that might seem to be connected, please email me with that information and let me know.It would be greatly appreciated. All descendants of the above ancestors lived in Bolivar County, Mississippi until the 1930's. Without any recorded information, I used vital statistics, census records, historical libraries, and state archives records. When the records failed, I fell back on my own experiences—hoping for forgiveness from my ancestors. It is good to know that every human being has two parents, and all persons are worthwhile, because all are able to contribute to their world in some special way.I realize it would not be possible nor practical to think that my relatives could rely on their memory to fill in all the vistas and trails of ancestors who lived and died long ago in other times and places. But with a little memory, researched records and a few oral stories, my family history has taken on shape. I have attempted to give an account of their challenges and achievements. My family history has been researched in parts, and as information could be found and pieced together, from the mid nineteenth century to the late twentieth century. Their culture was very religious and drove them on a continual quest for freedom from slave working conditions. From slave life to the Civil War, antebellum experiences, and the period of reconstruction, the families would struggle to ‘overcome’ their circumstances and move into an era where life became a continual pursuit of survival. | The Anderson, Emerson, Gibson Family Genealogies of MS/LA Updated August 14, 2005 |
