Jane Parris

Jane mother's name was Millie Hurst. Millie who was part Cherokee or Creek was a run away slave and to solve the problem the slave master cut off her leg. Millie and her husband (last name Hurst) were very dark skinned. After having several children that were too black to work in the house, Millie became pregnant by the her white owner (last name Parris). Jane was born therefore because there was a need for a house slave who met her owners color requirements. Jane had a younger full brother who was born for similar reasons. He, the brother, became a door man and Jane became a mid life. -( Told by Bessie Griffin 1/98)

Jane or Janie as many in the family remember her by, was born January 1, 1842 (1900 census). As far as the family can remember she was most of the time living with white people. She married twice. Her first husband was Jocob Ellison. They had four children ( Abram, Crawford, Julia, and Mary). Jacob died in 1866 ( Juttie Ellison -" he died when Crawford was 3 or 4 years old").

Her second husband , Aron Mars/Chandler, was born October 1815(1900 census). They was married July 17, 1867. They had seven children ( Mett, Jimmy, Juddie, Quinnie, Joe Ann, Georgia, and Carrie).

Jane had a white half sister who was call Vicey Parris and two white half brothers Mose and Bob(Robert) Parris. They were English or English decent. She had a white first cousin who was a blacksmith in Sardis, Ga. His name was Henry Prescott. Prescott's son bought Crawford Ellison a farm in Scriven County. ( Told by Juttie Ellison 8/1991)

Jane was a house slave until she was about 21 years old. When she was about nine or ten she developed an infected finger. Her complaints to her white mistress brought about the amputation of her finger when she was asked to lay it on the table so that it could be inspected.(told by Bessie Griffin, Georgia Jones, and Frankie Higgins)

The 1900 census cites Jane-married to Aron Chandler for 30 years, black, and had given birth to 16 children. She and Aron are listed as illiterate but both Georgia and Quinnie who were living with them at the time were in school and could read and write.

She died in July of 1927 at Brinson place in Burke Co. Ga. Her body was claimed by some unknown white( Blunts??) people and they had her embalmed which was unusual for blacks at that time. She was buried at Beech Branch Baptist Church.

Buzz,
Went to the National Archives today and looked at some census records. I think you'll find some of my findings quite interesting.
According to the 1900 census for the state of Georgia, Aron Chandler was born in October of 1815.(note his name is spelled with only one 'A'.) The card I saw listed him as the head of the household.
The card also listed Jane Chandler as his wife whose birth is indicated to be born in January of 1842. The year I got from you was 1849. Also listed were two children; Georgia, born March 1883 (my record shows 1882), and Quinnie, born December 1885 ( My record shows no birth day for Quinnie). Please let me know your sources and weather or not you think we should change our records so that they are consistent with the census records. I plan to go back down there several times. The use of the facility is free. Let me know if there is anything in particular you want me to look for. I think I may be able to get print outs of some of the documents. Naturally, I'll let you know what I find and will send you copies of anything I get printed. Take care.
My love to everyone. Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Howard,

Enclosed is the information you requested. I hope it will be of some help to you in the family history research. If you need anymore information give me a call.

Name of Jane's mother is not known, check Vicey for names.
Jane's mother was Cherokee Indian, husband white.
Jane's first husband was a black man probably a slave (no records of slaves at that time therefore
no records of birth and place of birth)
His name was Jacob Ellison

Jane married Jacob before 1865 (exact date not known)
They had four children
1.      Abram, born about 1859
2.      Zollie Crawford, Oct. 15, 1861
3.      Juila
4.      Mary
Jane's second husband used 2 different names because he had two different slave owners.
Mars (sp?) and Chandler were the names. He chose to use Aaron Chandler for whatever reason.

Issac Dixon was a first cousin to Zollie Crawford Ellison. Perhaps he was Jacob Ellison's nephew or Jane's nephew.

History of Beech Branch Baptist Church
