Notes for JACK GRISCOM:
Unknown to many genealogists, the existence of Jack Griscom was discovered by the novelist, James Michener, while researching his novel ‘Chesapeake’. Jack Griscom was a pirate who, with Henry Bonfluer, had pretended to be Welsh Quakers while scouting out the settlements of American in the late 1660’s. He married Grizell Morris, whose lineage is unknown, and had at least one child, Andrew Griscom I, the immigrant. Jack Griscom was shot to death in St. Lucie and his booty never recovered. The Michener reference is the only one leading to a Jack Griscom, no other information on him has been found.
The existence of a Grizell Morris as Andrew I mother is verified in Andrew’s Last Will and Testament. It can be deduced from later recollections that after the death of her first husband Jack, Grizell took a second husband, whose name is unknown. It is known that at the time of Andrews death Grizell Morris was living in New Jersey in the home that Andrew built for her. This house, along with a small acreage and ten pounds were bequeathed to her at his death.
