Find Family

From the Massachusetts Bay Colony to Washington Cty & Beyond

Now turn your eyes, and studious look
Within the pages of this book,
Crystalled of ancient lore, and fraught
With jeweled cabinets of thought
From old archives, and grass-grown grave,
From founts of Eld, whose waters lave
Our passing hours - though far, of yore,
They sprung on wild New England's shore,
So, in the pages of this book
As mirror of the past we look
On olden years, and ages dim:
The dead arise; men strong of limb,
All generations chant one hymn,
"All hail! the great Immanuel's name,"
To everlasting years the same.
Here sires and grandsires wake to life,
The babe, the youth, the bride, the wife,
The early church, the life-long strife
Till forests changed to harvest fields,
Till Nature's wealth to culture yields.
Lo! Past and Present weirdly blend,
The old, the young, as friend with friend??
Embrace, and kiss; all live, all lend
Their mingling lights of weal and wo,
T'illumine Life's calm or billowy flow.
Blest be the child whose spotless fame
Gilds or outshines the father's name;
Blest be that son of Pilgrim Sires
Whose filial hand their wonted fires
Re-kindles to perpetual light
Which else had fallen to voiceless night.

- Alfred Andrews

Little of the information on the pages contained herein has been checked against primary source documents, other than census images, by me personally. It relies _heavily_ on secondary and tertiary sources (transcribed vital and other records, published genealogies, town histories, online databases, etc.).

Please note that there are family groups included here that have been reconstructed almost _entirely_ from data obtained from census images. This does not take into account the possibility of, among other things: adoption, or children otherwise having the same surname as the family they reside with, while _not_ being the child of the head of household; a wife, or woman who is at least _assumed_ here to be a wife, not being the mother of any given child; errors made by the enumerator or by the person providing the information; etc.

Using this method, without at least some confirmation, there is always the possibility that one is dealing with a different person, and thus a different family, or family line even, altogether. Likewise, relying on vital records data where there is no corroborating evidence has its own pitfalls. I’ve made what I _hope_ to think are educated guesses, based on the information thus far available to me.

There are numerous conflicting dates and there are almost certainly other errors. I welcome all comments, additions, and corrections.

I believe I have attempted to take every precaution to respect the privacy of living persons. If you use any of this information, I can only ask that you do the same. Personal information on living individuals (date of birth, contact info, etc.) will _not_ be shared with anyone without the express permission of the individual in question, in any case.

Many of the photos have been digitally retouched by me, mostly to remove minor scratches, foxing, etc. See the link at the bottom of the page to see the originals of those that had _major_ issues.
