Notes for Leah Williams:
narrated by Jeneral Griner to grandson Glenn Rickey Griner who prepared the written version; ~1989)
In 1913 Jeneral was 23 years old.It was time for a wife and a family. After completing Henry's house in the last part of 1913, Jeneral began building a house of his own.He doesn't recall why he built the house, only that he did.Leah Williams was born to George W. Williams and Lou Turner Williams and lived with her four sisters (Ethel, Christine, Rena, Cora, and Faye Belle) and two brothers (Leondis and Mallory) at their home in Sand Valley community (5 miles north of Dorcus).
Leah was born in a small log house that still stands at Dorcus. She was born on 16 Dec 1892.George Williams moved his family to Sand Valley when Leah was 4 years old.Leah grew up at the Sand Valley home and it was here that Jeneral and Leah met and were married.Jeneral visited a little church at the Sand Valley community. After church, Jeneral and a group of young people went to the McClellan homestead for a social gathering. The Williams homestead was adjacent to the McClellan homestead and Leah was at the gathering.Jeneral met Leah at the McCLlellan residence and later walked Leah home.On the way home they had to ford a branch, so Jeneral carried Leah across on his back and a romance was born.He visited Leah numerous times after that and recalls that "I went to see Leah but Cora kept getting in the way."
Jeneral and Leah were married on 18 Jan 1914.Jeneral was not quite finished with his house at the time so they moved in with Henry and Amy for the first two weeks of their marriage. When the house was finished, they moved in and lived there from 1914 to 1944 when he built his new house (the one that stands today) adjacent to the old house. All of Jeneral and Leah's children were born and grew up at the old house.
Leah was a fifth generation Indian; a fact she was never proud of.As the story goes, a Scottish man by the name of McIntosh married a full blooded Creek Indian girl. They had two sons.McIntosh decided to leave the Indian girl and take his two sons back to Scotland. He stole his two sons away and put them to bed on the ship which soon was to sail and went below to gamble with some other men. While he was away two Indian braves (the Indian girl's two brothers) boarded the ship, got the two boys and brought them back. The ship was out to sea before the two boys were missed.McIntosh was not heard from again. The two boys grew up and had children. One of the two boys had a daughter named Kate who married William Cousins.William and Kate Cousins had a daughter named Sara Ann Cousins.Sara Ann Cousins married Zaph Turner.Zaph and Sara Ann Cousins Turner had a daughter named Louisi.Louisi Turner married George Williams.Leah Williams Griner was the daughter of George and Louisi Turner Williams.
