Notes for M
ALCOLM MATHISON:
On the 14th day of September, 1850, Malcolm Mathison and his family were the 29th family visited that day by the census taker. At that time, they were living in the Southern District of Henry County, Alabama. Malcolm's age is listed as 35 and his occupation-Farmer. Interestingly, his place of birth is listed as South Carolina. Who was Malcolm's father? The question remains, but there are some interesting clues.

First, Malcolm is the only "Mathison" listed in the Alabama Census Index for 1850. In the 1830 Census Index for Alabama, there again is only one "Mathison" listed. This time it is a John Mathison who, like Malcolm, is shown living in the Southern District of Henry County. The census also indicates that John is living with a female between 40 and 49 years old (his wife?) and with two males between the ages of 15 and 19 (his sons?). Malcolm would have been 17 at this time. Did Malcolm have a brother? Charlie Mathison who currently lives in Louisville, Kentucky, remembers talking to a relative who said Malcolm did have a brother and his name was Alexander. An Alexander Mathison appears in Wilcox County, Alabama in the 1850 census. His birthplace is listed as South Carolina. He has a one year old child named Alexander C. and a wife named Sombruna.

According to Land Patent Reports, on August 21, 1837, Malcolm bought 40 acres of land in Henry County in Township 7-N, Range 26-E. He bought 40 more acres in Township 8-N in August of 1853 and again in July of 1854.

According to the "Index to Pension Applications for Indian War Service between 1817 and 1898" transcribed by Virgil D. White, Malcolm served as a 2nd Lt in Captain Gordon's Company of 25th Alabama Volunteers in the Creek War. Assuming this occurred around 1837, Malcolm would have been 25 at the time. At age 58, Malcolm would be fighting again, this time as a private in the "Henry Mounted Rebels" during the Civil War.

Malcolm and Eliza are buried at New Prospect Free Will Baptist Cemetery near the small community of Edwin in the Southwest corner of Henry County.

Notes for E
LIZA WRIGHT:
Eliza's age is listed as 26 in the 1850 Alabama census, and her birthplace is listed as Georgia.
