This photo is a close-up from an old land deed in the Henry County courthouse. Between Eliza's first and last name is an "x" and "her mark" is written nearby. Malcolm also has a scribble off to the right. I assume this indicates that Malcolm and Eliza were illiterate. He was born in 1813 and she was born in 1823, so this would not be very unusual. If anyone interprets this differently, please let me know. Malcolm & Eliza are my ggg grandparents.
