Notes for Emma Lowry:
Emma was one of fifteen children born to the Lowry family.
Her eldest sister, Ann Lowry, married Charles Milburn who
was a wealthy farmer at Elm Farm Lydiate Liverpool.
Ann never acknowledged Emma as her sister and employed
her as nanny and governess to her children.
Emma became pregnant by James Arthur Clayton, the son of
another wealthy farmer who was courting Fanny, the youngest of the Mi lburn's daughters. Both families disowned James and Emma and James wa s sent to Canada to make his way in the world leavingEmma to
bring up the two young daughters, Edith and Doris. Emma ran a Tobacc onists shop in Liverpool as a widow.
