The Simpsons from St. Clair County, Alabama

Updated February 4, 2006

This Family Tree is constantly undergoing changes, as I locate or receive new information. I am researching Thomas Simpson, born about 1780 in Ireland/Scotland. He married Rebecca Arnold about 1805, and they had James C. Simpson (gggrandfather), Robert Simpson, Lewis, Martha, John and William. Thomas and Rebecca migrated from York, South Carolina to St. Clair County, Jefferson County area in the early 1800s. Their son, James C. Simpson was born abt 1814, in York County, South Carolina, but settled in St. Clair County, Alabama. James C. Simpson was married first to Martha Newton, then to Martha J. Painter in 1850. Martha's maiden name was Morgan, as she had been previously married to Joel Painter in 1846. James C. Simpson and Martha J. Morgan had many children, John, Drucilla, Mahala, James Grant Simpson (my ggrandfather) and others. James Grant Simpson was born April 6, 1869 in St. Clair County Alabama, married Martha Mize in 1890. James and Martha had many children, among them, Shirley C. Simpson, my grandfather, born on the 4th of July, 1898 in St. Clair County Alabama. Shirely C. Simpson married Louisa Daisy Little, born April 6, 1903, died in 1936. Shirley and Daisey Simpson had many children, amoung them, Billie Jo Simpson, my Mother. There are parental line tree branch connections shooting out in various surnames directions.

Although there is still much work to be done, I am publishing our family tree now, hoping to progress more rapidly in locating other family members who can share additional information in many areas. The tree is as correct as possible for now, and contains many details and thoughts for some of the inconsistant findings in areas of the family which may be in doubt. My struggles with some inconsistent information are out there for viewing.

I gratefully recognize two Cousins, who previsously developed much of the family data for Simpson and McLaughlin families, sharing their data with me, which comprises much of my family tree information. My tree deviates slightly on the Simpson family, from my Cousin Melody Chipley (from Tennessee). At points, we have taken slightly different views, but our main focus and content remains very similiar. Melody graciously shared all of her family photos of the Simpsons with me, and other valuable information.

My tree does not deviate at all on the McLaughlin and Pool(e) family, where the information was given to me by my Cousin, Paul McLaughlin (living in St. Clair County, AL). Paul was instrumental to intoducing me, my mother and my Uncles, to our McLaughlin family heritage. Paul continues to provide family information as he updates and or changes his own findings.

To both Cousins, I owe much thanks for all their hard work, and for paving the way. Paving the way is generally much more difficult than following a trail.

Cousins Melody and Paul, I Thank you!

TO MY MOTHER: My heart aches that you never knew the loving heart of your own mother. This tree and its continued research are for my mother and her siblings, who were torn apart and separated by their mother's early and untimely death in 1936. I dedicate this family tree and it's continued research to my Mother, Billie Jo Simpson and living Brother, Robert Vernon Simpson, who never knew their mother Daisy Little, or her family line, and who knew very little about their father, Shirley C. Simpson. I love you, Mother and Uncle Bobbie. In spite of being orphaned at very young ages, and other personal tragedies while growing up and as adults, you have been loving and giving parents to your own children. I also dedicate this tree to my mothers deceased siblings, and their families: James Simpson (who died at 12 yrs of age), Ernest Simpson (Uncle Ernie), and Mary Ruth Simpson Gibson (Aunt Polly), Andrew Lewis Simpson (Uncle Lewis).
