Notes for FRITZ GÜDEMANN: Fritz steadfastly retained the correct spelling of his surname of "Güdemann" until 1888, when he changed it to "Gudeman", as is evidenced by his signature on two promissory notes which he signed in that year. We can surmise that he acquiesced to the change in deference to his nine children, who had already made the change; and he probably felt it advisable to anglicize the name in anticipation of his naturalization which took place in 1889, one year before his death. Anna Maria, who died in 1886, never signed her married name other than as "Maria Güdemann".
