View Tree for Simon GüdemannSimon Güdemann (b. November 30, 1811, d. June 30, 1895)

Simon Güdemann (son of JOHANN JACOB GÜDEMANN and Maria Barbara Oswaldin) was born November 30, 1811 in Vogelbach, Baden, Germany, and died June 30, 1895 in Schopfheim, Baden, Germany. He married Anna Maria Kropf on October 31, 1837 in Marzell, Baden, Germany, daughter of Friedrich Kropf and Anna Maria Gassin.

 Includes NotesNotes for Simon Güdemann:
Simon moved from Vogelbach to Marzell in 1837 to marry Anna Maria Kropf, a native of Marzell.

When they married, Anna Maria's parents gave them a house in Marzell, and Simon was shown as a "Landwirt" (a landowner) when they lived there. Hard times must have befallen the family, because in 1861, when their daughter Maria was born, the family was living in Oberhäuser, four and one-half miles to the east, where Simon was shown as a day laborer. After the death of the daughter on January 5, 1863, in Oberhäuser, the family moved to Dossenbach, four miles south of Schopheim, where their last known child, Reinhard, was born on October 20, 1865. We know nothing more of the destiny of the family.

Even though both Anna Maria's parents were still living at the time of the marriage, Simon's older brother Friedrich Wilhelm Simon was appointed Anna Maria's guardian, apparently because she had just turned seventeen years old less than two months prior to the marriage.

Simon's grandmother was Anna Barbara Kropf and he married Anna Maria Kropf. The family of Anna Maria is traceable to the village of Reid, Baden, Germany, but no connection of Anna Barbara to this family could be found.

Karolina (spelled Carolina in America) emigrated to America and settled in St. Louis. Missouri, where she was employed as a nurse. She married Diedrich (Richard) Hellweg there in 1872, where they had three children. Through an incredible coincidence, she contacted her uncle Fritz Güdemann, then living in Woodford County, Illinois. The Hellwegs soon moved to live, if not with the Fritz Güdemann family, very close to the family. After the move the Hellwegs had three more children. It is believed that Karolina never contacted her family in Germany after she left.

We have no record of Karolina's emigration, but we do have a record that Karolina's older sister Magdalena obtained a passport in1865. We know, however, that Magdalena never made the journey because, later in 1865, she married Johann Jacob Fingerlin of Dossenbach. Could it be that Karolina surreptitiously emigrated using Magdalena's pasport?
