In 1775, Caleb Odell was a Lieutenant and William Odell an Ensign in the Revolutionary War.
In 1783, census in Shenandoah County there lived the widow of Samuell Odell and her sons James and Jonathan.
At Samuel's death, he left a will naming his wife Elizabeth and children:James, Samuel, Caleb, Elijah, Jeremiah, Benjamine and Jonathan. There may have been other children.
In Ruth Webb Odell's bk "Over the Misty Hills, the Story of Cocke Co TN" is this:
pg 122 - JEREMIAH Odell, son of Samuel, fought in the War of 1812 and was wounded on 9 Nov 1813. He moved to Saline Co, MO and gave 15 acres of land on which to found the county seat, Marshall. With him, Bartholomew Guin went from Cocke Co To MO. His wife was Elizabeth Guggey. (Note, I am not sure if Mrs Odell meant she was the wife of Jeremiah or Bartholomew.
Another quote: "pg 122...The three O'Dell families that ventured into the territory before it was known as Cocke Co TN were Samuel (who married Elizabeth Job), Isaac (married Abigail Mansfield )and later moved to Ray Co MO, and Benjamin (who married Mary McKay).
pg 120: "The southern O'dells are related to Samuel, Isaac, and Stephen O'Dell, sons of William O'dell 2nd and Sarah Vowels of Rye, Westchester Co, New York. In 1730, the 3rd generation became attracted to the Shenandoah Valley of VA by land grants.
I strongly suggest that if you are researching the early TN Odell/Odle families that you read Mrs. Odell's book. She begins the family with Isaac bc 1749 born in New York, thence to the Shenandoah Valley of VA, then to what is now Greene Co TN and thus to Cocke Co TN. It is a difficult book to follow but more TN Odell data than you will find any place else.
"Over the Misty Hills, the Story of Cocke Co TN" by Ruth Webb O'dell
Mrs. Webb shows that Samuel and Elizabeth Odell were in the Shenandoah Valley of VA as early as 1753 so they had to have been married by that yr. I believe that you could place a query on the McKay web page and get an approximate yr of marriage for Rachel O'dell and Abraham McKay. They surely married in VA as Mrs. Webb tells of their marriage and that they moved to Cocke Co TN.
