Welcome to Appalachian Homestead Farm & Preserve--all that remains of the original homestead of James Montabel Bennett and Martha Kirbey Bennett. The Homestead lies on the highest ridge of Kirbey Knob between Jackson and Macon Counties in Western North Carolina. A 52 acre tract containing the original homestead, farm and surrounding forest has been purchased and established as a nonprofit nature preserve. Our goal is to rebuild the cabin to the chimney still standing sentinel in the valley, restore the pre-blight chestnut log barn, and establish Spirit of Appalachia Rural Life Museum and Folk School.Original land grants and deeds dating to 1835 are in hand, along with paintings and drawings by family members of the original buildings.Direct descendents of the Bennett/Kirbey family are now stewards of the Homestead. We are searching for any information about generations before or after Mont and Martha and we welcome partners in the journey ahead! | Appalachian Homestead Farm & Preserve Updated February 20, 2005 |
