Notes for J
OSEPH PAIN I:
From the research of Robert Gerrity:
Joseph was the youngest son of Ralph and Dorothy by a considerable number of years. He received about 100 acres of land from his parents (before and after Ralph's death), including the family homestead after Dorothy's death. He began selling off pieces of the land to brothers and neighbors quite soon, and apparently thereby squandered his entire estate. There is no record of any property passing on to his children, nor is there a probate for him or his wife. As a result this family is difficult to trace, and certainly did not have the financial resources that might have been available to Joseph's siblings' children.

Joseph and his wife were still alive on 24 January 1748/9 when they witnessed a deed to Philip Hathaway. It is likely that this is the Joseph Paine whose death was recorded in Berkley for 24 October 1760 (Berkley VR.)

Notes for R
UTH CASTLETON:
Per Robert Gerrity: Ruth was part of a Protestant emigration from all over Ireland that first came to Boston between 1715 and 1719. There were several groups. The one Ruth was in was led by a Rev. Thomas Craighead. Craighead and others actually settled in the Freetown area briefly. And it was he who married Ruth & Joseph I. Published lists of Protestant clergy in Ireland do list several Castleton men as settled clergy. (AKA Ann Castleton, per the research of Chris Hanson.)
