"Accidents Kill 2; State's '57 Toll Hits 47"
A 17 year-old youth was killed in a four-car crash on the Eastern Shore yesterday and a pedestrian was fatally injured in Baltimore early today to raise Maryland's 1957 traffic toll to 47.Four persons were also injured last night when their automobile plowed into three parked cars on Frederick road near Thistle road, Catonsville and two policement were injured in an accident on the Orleans street viaduct.
The dead are:
CHARLES F. DIETRICH, 17, Grasonville.
JOSEPH S. MANGALIVITI, 72, 3400 block Cottege avenue.
Unconscious Condition -- Members of the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department worked for twenty minutes with mauls and acetylene torches to free Dietrich from the crashed wreckage of his automobile.
Removed in an unconscious condition he was rushed to Easton Memorial Hospital where he died at 11.40 o'clock last night, nearly eight hours after the accident.
State trooper M. S. Clevenger said Dietrich was southbound on State Route 18 near U.S. Route 50 when his vehicle collided with an automobile parked on the side of the road.
Swung Across Road -- Police said Dietrich's car bounced off the first parked car, swung across the road, hit another parked vehicle, and careened into the center of the highway where it was struck head-on by a car driven by Henry O'Donnell, 39 of Granville, Md.
Mr. O'Donnell suffered a fractured jaw, severe lacerations and bruises.A passenger in his automobile, Charles W. Sterling, 30, of Queenstown, received a fractured right angle and face cuts.
