THE WILL OF MARMADUKE ROYAL DATED MARCH 30.1835
In the name of God, Amen, I Marmaduke Royal of the County of Carteret, and the State of North Carolina, being in reasonable health and intact mind and memory, thanks be to God, calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make this my last will and testament this day. First of all I give to the house of Almighty God my body, to be buried in the ground, and by the resurection, I shall ascend to live again by the almighty power of God. As to such worldly estate where with God hath blessed me in this life I give domain of the same in the following manner and form. First I give and bequeath to Sarah, my wife, our bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. Also to my beloved son,Ross B. Royal ,fifty acres of my banks land taking in on the eastard side of my track where I now live to him and his heirs forever. To my grandson, John R.Royal, the other fifty acres with the houses and improvements after the death of me and my wife. To my grandson, Marmaduke Royal Fulcher, my small guns, and to my grandson, Joseph Royal Guthrie, my other gun. I leave to my beloved wife,Sarah, one third part of my personal property during her natural life,which has not already mentioned. Divide the rest among any heirs at law, namley, Esther Guthrie, Elizabeth Willis, and Mary Fulcher. I do request, appoint, and direct Ross B. Royal and John R Royal executors to this my last will and testament. In writing where as I have hearby set my hand and seal this 30th day of march in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty five. It is also my will that my two negros, Bess and Onslow, may have their chose of whom of my heirs they will live.

Ambrose Jones and James (illegible) are being paid this day by the heirs of Marmaduke Royal to value the two negros belonging to his wife. The negro man names Onslow valued at one hundred and fifty dollars, and the negro woman Bess at fifty dollars.
