Notes for W
ILLIAM CANTERBURY:
There is little trace of the Canterbury family that existed in the old Southwest Territory along the border of Tennessee and North Carolina but both the Canterbury and Calvert families were very early settlers and both families intermarried during the pioneer period. Guthrie family history contends that the Canterbury's were a prominent family in Virginia. To what extent this may be true, is unknown, however the name, Canterbury, does go back to the earliest colonial times in Virgina. Most of the known facts about Williams family can be found in what is known as the "Canterbury Bible". This Bible which was handed down to Mary Canterbury became the family Bible of the Thomas Guthrie family and is still in possession of Guthrie family members to date.
Although the "Canterbury Bible has been a great help in birth, death and marriage dates, it lends no information about ancestors of William.

Notes for B
ETSEY ANN LAWSON:
Betsey Ann Lawson was the daughter of William Lawson who had come to America from Scotland about 1747. The family lived for a time in North Carolina where Betsey Ann was born but settled in Montgomery County, Virginia in the 1770's where she married William Canterbury on Thursday August 06, 1789.
Of special note about Betsey Ann Lawson is that her father William served in Captain Daniel Trigg's Company of the Mongomery County Militia during the American Revolution. He enlisted September 13,1777 and fought Indians in the western part of Virginia. His name appears on a list of officers and non-commissioned officers dated March 31, 1781 at which time he was 50 years old. He was in a group of Virginians under Col. Campbell who assembled at Sycamore Shoals on the Wautaga River and moved into South Carolina in 1780. He also participated in the battle of King's Mountain.
