Descendants of Robert Ward Generation No. 1 1. ROBERT1 WARD died 1777 in Surry County, North Carolina. He married MARY. Notes for ROBERT WARD: Information given to me by Ferril Lee Hastings 6871 West 116th Terrace, Stillwell, Kansas 66085 and Marilyn Ward Lynch, 512 North 2nd Street, Sayre, Oklahoma 73662 Robert Ward will dated November 3rd 1777, Surry Co., the Province of North Carolina, Will Book #1, Page 104. Entered into the court records in May of 1778, so they presume Robert died shortly before that date. The Will mentions Henry is of Surry Co.; William and Robert of Bule Co.; John, a minor; witnessed by James Sanders, the father of Henry's wife Charity. The Will also witnessed by Henry Ward, probably a brother to Robert. As an heir it probably would not have been legal for his son Henry to witness his will. George Woolium was also a witness. Robert could write and refers to himself as a "a planter being weak in body but of perfect mind and memory; thanks be to Almighty God for it..... and First I do Will my soul to almighty God and my body to the earth to be buried in a Christian like manner." It was the custom of the time, as well as following the Revoluntary War for each Province or state to issue their own currency. Robert left each of his sons "27 pounds and 10 shillings, currency of the Province of North Carolina." He appointed his wife, Mary as the sole executor of his Will. Robert left his estate to Mary and upon her death or remarriage to be divided among his sons and daughters. Children of ROBERT WARD and MARY are: 2. i. JONATHAN (SR.)2 WARD, b. Abt. 1750, Pennsylvania; d. Abt. 1845, Hendricks, Indiana. ii. ANN WARD. iii. ELIZABETH WARD. iv. MARY WARD. 3. v. SARAH (SALLY) WARD. vi. WILLIAM WARD. 4. vii. HENRY WARD, d. Bef. 1800. viii. ROBERT WARD. Generation No. 2 2. JONATHAN (SR.)2 WARD (ROBERT1) was born Abt. 1750 in Pennsylvania, and died Abt. 1845 in Hendricks, Indiana. He married HANNAH PETTY Abt. 1778 in Surry County, North Carolina, daughter of WILLIAM PETTY and ELIZABETH MOORE?. She was born Abt. 1760 in Virginia, and died Abt. 1835 in Hendricks County , Indiana. Notes for JONATHAN (SR.) WARD: In the North Carolina State census of 1784-1787 John and Hannah are found living in Surry County, with one other male and three other females, along with Hannah's father, William Pettey, Jr. and 2 females. Henry and Charity are also listed along with four other females, 1 other male and 1 black. James Sanders is shown to have a household of 21, which included 6 males and 3 females and 12 blacks. In the 1790 Wilkes County, North Carolina Census, John and Hannah are found with 2 sons under the age of 16 and 2 daughters. Wilkes County was formed from Surry County, so this was probably not a move on the families part, but a change in county borders. In the Kentucky State archives we found John Ward, Sr. listed in an early tax list for Montgomery County, Kentucky. On the 1810 tax list we find John Sr. and Jr. are listed. In 1811 land records of Montgomery County, Kentucky show John and Hannah selling a parcel of land to their son-in-law. Robert Cole. ( Robert Cole drops off the Montgomery County tax list in 1826.). In Fayette County, we found John and Hannah selling land again in 1817. research by Doris Hubble and Dorothy Harris Ward of Pittsboro place John Sr, in Hendricks County, Indiana purchasing land on August 27 1837. They settled on a small tract of land and there was no actual town in existence at that time. Although the village of Harrisburg was plotted and later became the town of Brownsburg. It is possible John Jr. actually came to Hendricks County first along with or later joined by his father. John Sr. served seven years (according to Lyle Ward) with the Continental Congress Army of the Revolutionary War, probably joining in the second year of the struggle at the age of 18. We know at one point he served with Captain Smith under Col. Boswaork?. They banded together at Parisburg? on the Savannah River where they met with General Rutherford's Brigade and were there placed under proper officers. At Parisburg they were detached and placed under the command of Col. Syth and Major Nelson of the continental Army under the command of General Lincoln and were called and acted as a "light infantry". they crossed Savannah River and went to briar Creek where they engaged and were defeated in March 1777. they moved to Black swamp in South Carolina where they were discharged;as was common in that time. The men moved in and out of the continental Army, sometimes serving as little as three months. Perhaps they would return home and care for the crops and family and re-enlist for another period of perhaps six months or a year. John Sr. is also believed to have been involved in the battle of Cowper, January 16 1787. At the Shallowford on the __?__ there was an engagement in the month of October 1787 against the Tories. Because of one man in Brownsburg, Indiana John Ward Sr. and his service to his country has not been forgotten. Winston Coffman's grandfather remembered John Sr. and passed on stories to his son who passed them on to Winston. John Sr. died about 1850. about a quarter of a century after Indiana became a state, believed to be about 90 years of age. As a child Winston Coffman often visited the grave of John Sr. while playing near white Lick Creek. In newspaper articles written about 1861 it is reported that on memorial Day Winston and his wife Mary, she dressed in an ankle length calico dress and a bonnet to match and Winston in a beaver hat with a horn pouch at his side, visited the grave marked with a simple stone bearing the words "JON WARD U.S. SOLDIER REV. WAR". ( Mrs. Allie Hoggins said grandson Armstead secured the government marker. But Doris Hubble said Armstead died in 1902 and according to Winston Coffman there was only a big fieldstone marking the grave when he was a young boy. Doris feels it must have been about 1924 or 1926 before the marker was placed. Only descendants living in the area at the time were of Jemima Ward Duncan and William and Leah Ward.) Winston loaded his rifle, pushing the power and pellet into the barrel, then fired the homemade musket over the grave. Over the years Winston made sure the grave was not forgotten, though it involved a walk of nearly a mile through high weds and sometimes mud, across a creek and up a small hill to a spot easily hidden. On Memorial Day over many years he marked it with a flag and at one point a Girl Scout troop placed a fence around the site. Because of growth the isolated spot became the prime location of a new shopping mall, and it became necessary to move John's remains. In a fourth of July ceremony in 1984 the American Legion dedicated the new grave site at Brownsburg cemetery. When she learned of this Doris Hubble quickly contacted the local funeral home to find out why Hannah's body had not been moved with John's and discovered they had not known she was buried there. After being married more than 60 years and having been buried beside each other for 140 years it was a highly disquieting situation. Through Doris' efforts Hannah's remains were placed at the foot of her husband's new grave site and a stone was ordered. John's name is among a list of revolutionary Soldiers whose names are on a bronze tablet in the East Hall of the Courthouse at Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana More About JONATHAN (SR.) HENRY2 WARD (ROBERT1) died Bef. 1800. He married CHARITY SANDERS December 24, 1775, daughter of JAMES SANDERS and SARA TULLY. She was born April 05, 1760 in Johnston County, North Carolina, and died Aft. 1850. Notes for HENRY WARD: At some point after 1787 Henry and Charity left North Carolina. On the 13th day of January 1845 in Madison County, Georgia the 82 year old widow Charity applied for a Revolutionary War Pension based on Henry's service against the English. In a lengthy sworn statement made by James Sanders, Charity's brother, he states he and Henry volunteered in Surry County, North Carolina and marched to Rowan County, where they joined a considerable number of volunteers and attached themselves to Captain Reed's infantry on the 24th day of June 1780 and served as privates. Shortly afterward Major Lewis took command and they marched in pursuit of the Tories. They were discharged on the 24th day of September 1780 and returned home. Henry again volunteered to serve with Lt. John Blalock in Captain Woodbridge's Company of horseman on the 1st day of October 1780 and served as a private in the Cavalry in a company called Cullen County Rangers for the purpose of supressing the Tories and guarding the frontiers of the county. One of the justices of the peace who accepted the statement was a William Sanders, another of Charity's brothers. These troops marched to Salem, North Carolina and endured skirmishing through the countryside until Cornwallis marched through North Carolina at which time the company joined General Pickens' Army and pursued Cornwallis to near the Virginia line. The Lt. Blalock's company of County Rangers were detached to return from the ? of the country against the Tories. Henry served as a County Ranger until peace was made in 1783 under captain Woodbridge and Lt. Blalock. henry is mentioned in Surry County, North Carolina deed book C, pp 16-17, May 8, 1784 where James Sanders and his wife sold 500 acres to Ninon Riley. The land was formerly owned by Henry Ward. Their daughter Nancy was born about 1786. they moved to Georgia after 1787 and charity is listed as head of the household in Oglethorpe County, Georgia in 1800. They were married in 1775, so they had about 25 years together, having spent the first twelve years or so in North Carolina. Notes for CHARITY SANDERS: In 1800 Charity Ward is listed as head of household in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. In 1804 she also signed for her share of her father's estate, which leads us to believe Henry Ward died before 1800. On Feb. 23, 1804 she received of James Sanders estate the sum of $241.75. On each document Charity made her mark, which would lead one to believe she could not write. Charity is listed in the Madison County, Georgia tax list which begins in 1813. He married NANCY BILLINGTON December 15, 1810 in Montgomery County, Kentucky, daughter of WILLIAM BILLINGTON and ELIZABETH BURT. She was born July 1796 in Hamilton County, Ohio, and died Abt. 1859 in Jasper County, Illinois. Notes for JOHN (JR.) WARD: A Newspaper account reports the following some ninety years after the fact: ( Article states John fought in the French and Indian war, which took place 1754 and 1763. so it is not possible John took part. we don't know what the author might have meant.) "John Ward Jr. was in the War of 1812 and the French and Indian War and was at one time captured by the Indians and shot. But by showing so brave a spirit, they relented and kept him prisoner for about six months. A brother Armstead, who was so badly wounded that he could not walk, was scalped and left to perish in an old building that he had taken refuge in, which was burned. The captive, John was treated with kindness, especially by the women, and when in their was dances they would decide to kill their prisoners the women would conceal him. One of these Indian women fell in love with him but when the captive told her that he had left a wife and little child among his people she left him and did not return. His name was Brave chief." this tale was apparently related by his son, Armstead (named for his deceased brother), and we suspect it grew into something of a tall tale eighty years after the fact. It is highly unlikely any Indian tribe would have awarded an outsider the title of chief, though we do not doubt his bravery. we do know Armstead was killed at the Battle of Raisin River and John Jr. was wounded by a ball to the side of his body. Doris Hubble wrote of the traditional family story handed down. "John Ward Jr. and his brother Armstead Ward were in the battle of Raisin River January 22, 1813. both were wounded, Armstead seriously, with a broker thigh but John was able to walk. they were taken prisoner by the Indians. John was saved by an Indian Squaw when he made her understand by gestures that he had a wife and a child. Armstead was scalped and his body was burned. This tradition was given by Armstead, son of John Jr., Lyle W. Ward of Greenup, Illinois wrote about 1860 that he had often heard his father, James H. Ward tell this story. This tradition is borne out of the War record of Armstead Ward, reported 'missing in action January 22, 1813' and the pension and bounty Land Records of John Ward Jr. John Ward Jr.'s pay records are dated from August 15 through March 4 1813, he served with captain Pugh's company of Infantry with the 1st Regimental Kentucky Volunteer Militia. Serving as a private his pay ranged from $6.66 a month to $8.00. Two hours before daylight on January 22 1813 (this is the date Armstead and John Ward were reported missing), with snow still falling, Frenchtown was suddenly shaken by artillery fire and the rattle of musketry. War whoops were heard. Almost at once the American right was overwhelmed. within minutes 100 soldiers were scalped by Indians who had gotten into gear. General Winchester, blundering to the front to rally his men, was taken prisoner. We assume John Jr. returned to Kentucky to his family in 1813. Evidently his wound was crippling for he made a deposition in august of 1814 in Montgomery county, Kentucky seeking an invalid's pension. John Jr. stated he was wounded as he was stooping to help his wounded brother. The doctor, said it appeared the musket ball had entered on the left side of his back, just below the shoulder blade and passed through his chest and came out his left nipple. The wound healed over, broke open, healed and broke open again in a matter of months. The wound eventually healed, but John Jr. complained of pains on sever exercise and the doctor felt he could not pursue his labors as a farmer in order to support himself and his family. It is at this time the doctor reported John Jr. as having a wife and several children. August 1 1827 Jefferson County Indiana, another deposition is made by John Jr. asking that his invalid pension be paid to him in Indiana, as he had hope of acquiring land in Indiana which he had not been able to do in Kentucky. He made a mark, so evidently he could not read or write. John Sr. swore to the truth of his son's deposition. October 8 1834 another request was made in Croydon, Harrison County, Indiana, asking for an increase in his pension with the doctor certifying as to his increased disability. we can only imagine what it must have been like for this man, landless, almost an invalid, the father of ten living children. Or how his wife coped. We do know families stayed close together supporting each other emotional, spiritually, and financially. In those farm days when it required extensive labor to farm even the smallest acreage children not considered dependents, but were valued for the job contributions they would make toward the welfare of the family unit. The 1834 deposition states John Jr. was put on the pension roll at $2.50 a month but afterwards was raised to $4.00 and now it was increased to $6.00. Physicians Thomas Craig and James M. Crutcher stated that John Jr. had "difficulty of breath, pain in the breast, spitting of blood and general disability with a hacking cough. He married AMELIA YELTON May 07, 1854 in Hazel Dell, Ilinois, daughter of ROBERT YELTON and CATHERINE. She was born July 27, 1834 in Shelby Co., Indiana. Notes for JR. JOHN WARD: John Ward fought in the Mexican war (information taken from the book The History of Hendricks County, Indiana 1976) Received from Barbara (moxy5@sbcglobal.net) This is what Uncle Buck wrote about his grandpa, John Robert Ward: John Robert's father, also named John, married Amelia Yelton on May 7, 1854. she was born in Shelby Co. IN 7/27/1834, the daughter of Robert and Catherine Yelton. 5 children were born: John Robert, James Oliver, Nancy, and 2 that died as babies. After the death of his father, John Robert worked for an uncle Armstead Ward in Hidalgo. His mother remarried a man named Jacob Gerrard on 5/25/1874. What's interesting is that Uncle Buck also wrote that John Robert was a singing teacher, and as a young man he moved with his mother and family to Danville, IL, where he met Annie Edwards. He wrote that John [not John Robert] Ward was born 3/20/1826 and died 12/17/1865. He was a soldier in the Mexican War and blew a conkshell as a bugle. while in the service he carried a testament in a vest pocket that was hit by a bullet that made a dent in the testament but did not wound him. A cousin, name unknown, in Casey, IL has the testament. John's name is on a plaque in the capitol building in Indianapolis as he was with a regiment from IN. John, his father, also John [good grief!] a soldier in the war of 1812 and an infant son are buried in the Ward Cemetery, 3 miles NW of Rose Hill, IL......... 1860 U.S. Census Crooked Creek, Jasper Co., Illinois ancestry.com Image 146 of 225 Dwelling 1101-996 John Ward male age 33 farmer property value 1500 personal value 100, born KY Millie female age 24 born Indiana John R. male age 3 born Illinois Sarah female age 1 born Illinois More About JR. ARMSTEAD JOHN4 WARD (BENNETT3, JONATHAN (SR.)2, ROBERT1) was born January 05, 1833 in Indiana, and died September 07, 1916 in Georgetown, Illinois. He married (1) PHOEBE EDGINTON in Delaware County, Indiana, daughter of THOMAS EDGINTON. She was born April 23, 1832 in Indiana or Ohio, and died September 16, 1877 in Vermilion County, Illinois. He married (2) MARY JANE ESTES March 25, 1880 in Danville, Illinois, daughter of LABORIN ESTES and POLLY CHAMBERS. She was born November 15, 1846 in Elmwood Twp, Vermilion Co., Illinois, and died October 24, 1916 in Georgetown, Illinois. Notes for ARMSTEAD JOHN WARD: Email from Joy Foertsch Send this information SOURCE: From the Past and Present of Vermillion Co. Illinois 1903 Pages 245 & 246. Eighty acres of good farming land on section 1, Georgetown township, constitutes the farm of A. Ward, who is there carrying on general agricultural pursuits and stock raising. He has resided in Vermilion county since 1871 and is a native of Switzerland county, Indiana, born on the 5thof January, 1833. His parents were Bennett and Nancy (Boggs) Ward, the former a native of North Carolina and the latter of Kentucky. In an early day the father removed to Indiana, where he lived for a number of years. He afterward spent a few years in Missouri and while there his wife died. Subsequently he returned to Vermilion County, Illinois, making his home with the subject of this review until his death, which occurred on the 3d of July, 1881. A. Ward is the only one of the children born unto his parents now residing in Vermilion County. He pursued his education in the district schools of Delaware county, Indiana. He settled upon a farm there, making it his place of abode until 1871, when he came to this county. In 1875 he bought his present farm on section 1, Georgetown township. Throughout his entire life he has carried on the occupation to which he was reared and in his farming methods is progressive, keeping in touch with the best methods of cultivating the soil and caring for stock which are in vogue at the present day. When he located here the land was all covered with timber, but he cleared this and has placed his fields under a high state of cultivation. His farm is today well improved with modern equipments and he is successfully carrying on general farm work and stock-raising. Mr. Ward was first married while living in Delaware county, Indiana, to Miss Phoebe Edginton, a native of Ohio. Her father removed to Delaware County, Indiana, at an early day and there died. Mrs. Ward passed away at her home in this county in 1877. Of seven children born of that marriage five are yet living: Alonzo, who resides in Kansas; Wilson, who married Maggie Rogers and is living in Mead county, Kansas; Franklin, who resides at home with our subject: Grant, who wedded Mary Rosenbarger and is living in Veedersburg, Indiana; and Cooley, who married Maude Manley and resides in Georgetown, where he is conducting the Rival Restaurant. Those deceased are Mary, Amanda and Calvin. After the death of his first wife Mr. Ward was again married, his second union being with Mary J. Estes, a native of Elwood township, Vermilion County, born in October, 1845. Her parents, Laborin and Polly (Chambers) Estes, were very early settlers of this county, coming to Illinois from North Carolina and here they spent their remaining days. Both Mr. and Mrs. Ward hold membership in the Christian church of Georgetown township and are faithful to its teachings and principles. He has always voted with the Democracy but has never been an office seeker. His life has been one of untiring industry and since coming to Vermilion County he has accomplished a great amount of work, in clearing his land, preparing it for the plow and placing it under the high state of cultivation in which it is to-day found. Ward male farmer owns home worth $800.00 Age 73, age married 23, born Ill. Annie E. wife age 72, age married 22, born Indiana From Barb (moxy5@sbcglobal.net) This is a little story my uncle Ward "Buck" Matthews wrote when he was alive: "The Wards' lived near Armstrong, IL in 1882 when they with 13 other families formed a colony, chartered a train, and moved all their belongings and families and homesteaded near Huron in Beadle County, S.D. while there they experianced tornadoes, forest fires and mirages. The 1st year they lived in a sod shanty and sold oxen. John Robert's mother Amelia and brother Jimmy moved with them, but Jimmy moved to Bloomfield, IA about 1 yr later. In 1889 after 3 children of one of the families that went with them froze to death in a blizzard on the way home from school and one half mile from home, they moved to Bloomfield, IA, where they resided for 4 years. John worked as a horseman in a livery stable. In 1893 they moved back to Illinois in a covered wagon, bringing the furniture with a pig in a box on one side of the wagon, and 12 chickens on the other side. It took 9 days to reach Armstrong, IL they settled in Jasper Co. where they lived on a farm south of Union School for 2 years then moved to the Gerrard farm NW of Point Pleasant for 3 years. They bought a farm in Cumberland Co. in 1899 one mile south and 3/4 mile west of the Block church. The farm had a log house and a new frame house. In 1928 John Robert and Annie moved to Greenup where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary 11/11/1930. Notes for HERSCHEL MATHEWS: Received this information from Barb at (moxy5@sbcglabal.net) on 3/15/2004 In 1973 Uncle Buck wrote down the family infomation so it could be preserved Uncle Buck is really Ward Matthews, the oldest son of May Bell Ward and Thomas Matthews....no one ever called him "Ward"...he was always "uncle Buck"...he was also my favorite uncle, always smiling, and very kind. He died in Champaign, IL a couple of years ago. Herschel was murdered on 10/18/1941 and Hazel never remarried. He was killed for a large sum of money he had won from a trip gambling in Chicago, and they found him slumped over in his car with a large gash/bump to the back of his head.
