BIOGRAPHY: Amos Milton, the 6th child of Simeon and Nancy Vaughn Garriott, bought several more acres of land in Elk Creek Valley, Gibson Township, Washington County, from the government. Amos Milton was a soil conservationist and, like his father, Simeon, knew that, "The soil and the forests needed to be protected. He realized that the land, even in this lush country could wear out and that the forest, which had been so many years in growing could be depleted in a short time through overcutting. He treated the land as a precious heritage, passing this appreciation on down to his son, Augustus." More About Amos Milton Garriott: Burial: Mt. Dau age 7 months born Indiana Spring 1887 In the spring of 1887, they left Indiana to take up a homestead in Kansas. Sister (Della) was 8-1/2 years old, brother (Leroy) was 6 years old. Mother (Myrta) was 3 years old. They went by wagon and mother said that she walked every step of the way. They settled on a farm five and a half miles north and one-half mile west of Rozel, KS. Grandpa (Theodore) built a small four-room house with lean-to for kitchen." When Grandfather Theodore and family were living north of Rozel, KS, on the farm, he would work in Larned, KS, (18 miles away) doing carpentry for a living. He would, on Sunday, evening walk the distance, work all week, and then carry a hundred pound sack of potatoes on his shoulder, walking back home for the weekend. He was a tall man, and possessed quite a stride. His body was shipped to his home north of Rozel, April 24th, and interred in the Rozel cemetery April 25th. Theodore Smith was married to Catherine Shuck in Harrison county, Ind., Dec. 24, 1878. To this union was born seven children, all of whom survive him; Mrs. Della Wood of Wichita, Leroy Smith now of Protection, Kans., and the other five, Myrta, Yuill, Golden and Velvet, are still at the old home. Two grandchildren have preceded him to the better land, and one survives him, together with his wife and the children named above. Mrs. Smith, the wife and mother, has been an invalid for fifteen years, not having walked a step for eleven years. Theodore Smith was one of our pioneer settlers, having come to Pawnee county in '86 and settled on the claim where his family now resides. His wife and children followed him here in the spring of '87. He and his family have known all the hardships of pioneer life. He was a strong and sturdy man and lived an active life, and his sudden death came as a shock to everyone. He was well known and respected throughout his home community. One of the largest crowds the vicinity has ever witnessed gathered at the home Thursday at 3 P.M. to pay their last respects to their old friend and neighbor. The services at the home were conducted by Rev. Irwin of Burdett, and the Odd Fellows, of whom he was a member, took charge at the cemetery More About Theodore Smith: Burial: Rozel Cemetery, Rozel, Kansas Notes for Catharine Shuck: I received a fifty-nine page packet from a distant cousin of mine in Kansas. This family history was done on the Smith's by a woman named Viana McCrown. On Page 31 of this history paper, it says Theodore Smith, who was my grandmother's father, married Catherine Shuck on December 24, 1878, in Harrison Co., IN. I do not know where Miss Viana McCown got her information but she sounds very trustworthy. She had an article written about her in April 17, 1964, issue of the Pontiac Illinois Daily leader. She is a relative somewhere along the line. This history paper goes from 1775 to 1966. She lists a lot of references such as a family bible, a book call the Nance Memorial that is now in a museum in Indiana, a day journal kept by William Retzier Smith, and many other books, so I am confident the Smith information is correct. Any help you can give me would be appreciated as I have been blessed with surnames like Smith, Johnson, Davee, Retzier, Guyton, Morrison, and that is just for starters on my side. Most of the work on the Ziegenmeyer's was already done back to the 1400 and that is what got me started. I didn't even know who my grandparents on my father's side was when I started all this. 25 November 1921 Catherine Shuck - Catherine Shuck was born July the first, at Elizabeth, Harrison county, Indiana; died Nov. 25, 1921, at Rozel, Kansas, age 73 years, 3 months and 21 days. She grew to womanhood in the old home, and on December 24, 1878, she was married to Theodore Smith of Floyd county, Indiana. In 1888 she moved with her family, consisting of her husband, herself and four children, to Rozel where she remained until death called her to her long and eternal home. To this union were born seven children; Mrs. Della Woods of Garden City; LeRoy Smith of Protection; Yuill W. Smith, who made the supreme sacrifice during the war, October 17, 1948; Mrs. Myrta E. Davee, Golden F. Smith, Mrs. Minnie L. Blackwell and Velvet F. Smith of Rozel. She leaves to mourn her loss, besides these children, one sister, Mrs. Sarah Wilson of Elizabeth, Ind., and thirteen grandchildren. Mrs. Smith united with the United Brethren church while yet in her youth and remained a faithful Christian to her death. In Mrs. Smith we have one of the most beautiful examples of Christianity; she became afflicted with blood poison in 1900 which left her a permanent invalid (Catherine ran a sewing machine needle in her finger), and while in all these years she was so afflicted no one ever heard her complain, and was always working at the things that her condition would permit her to work at, and was always cheerful, and had a smile and pleasant word for everyone. It is fitting here to mention the faithful and loving care of her daughter Myrta who assumed the responsibility and care of her during those 21 years of invalidism and like the mother never complained of her responsibility nor shirked what she considered her privilege. She was assisted by her brothers and sisters in the care but upon Myrta was the real responsibility. "Servant of God, well done! Thy glorious warfare's past, The battle's fought, the race is won, And thou art crowned at last." Rev. Jas. J. Via of Larned had charge of the funeral services which were held in the Baptist church Sunday, Nov. 27 at 2:00 P.M. She was laid to rest in the Rozel cemetery.
