Notes for J
AMES GUYTON:
James Guyton was born in 1833 in Dublin, Ireland, he came to America at the age of 16. From the time he left home to the end of his life, he never again saw a member of his family. Little is known of them. He is known to have mentioned two younger brothers, Peter and Dick, and a sister, Mary. His father was a writer who contributed to the magazines of his day. He is known to have mentioned a titled uncle (hereditary title), who was inordinately proud of his social position that he lost his mind. Since his father was a younger son, there was no inheritance for him. James Guyton too, was a younger son; therefore he came to America to make a life for himself. One of the pleasant memories of his departure from Liverpool, England (his family had moved from Dublin, Ireland to Birmingham, England) was the fact that his half brother John McCall ( His mother's son from a previous marriage), who went down to see him off, gave him his overcoat because it was cold. He went first, upon arriving in America, to New York where he called on relatives named Shean, one of who was a senator. They were people of means and gave their penniless caller a cool reception. He made no further efforts to contact them and went to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he learned the shoe manufacturing business. He then went to Winchester, Kentucky, where he operated a shoe factory of his own. It was here that he met and married Lucy Attersall. Later, he bought the country home of General Blackwell and tried his hand at farming. When his house burned, he built a house at nearby Haden's Corner. A tradition in the family is that the name Guyton was originally spelled "GUITON". It is said that a sign painter misspelled the name when he painted a sign for the factory and that, to avoid confusion, James Guyton adopted the misspelled name for his own.
According to a Niece who lived in Winchester, Kentucky, James Guyton was a popular man in Winchester. His ready wit made him a favorite with everyone. The invention of machines for making shoes made it unprofitable for him to continue his factory in which shoes were made by hand; therefore, in 1881, he moved to Dallas, Texas, where he engaged in the real estate business. In later years, he returned to Ireland and England with the hope of finding members of his family. A friend of the family, who remembered him, told him that one relative had gone to the gold fields of Africa, another to Australia. Aside from this meager information, he could learn nothing about them. He did not remain long in England because his heart was now in America and even the manner of speech of the English people seemed strange to him. He died in Dallas, Texas, and was buried in Winchester, Kentucky.

Letter from David Guyton ( DFGuyton@compuserve.com) Friday August 25, 2000

James Guyton's origins in Ireland are more conjectural. Records are so fragmented and so many have been lost that it is well nigh impossible to establish family groupings. The most plausible origin of the line in Ireland dates back to the arrival of Huguenot refugees from France in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.
Going back to the mid sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, there were two lines of minor French nobility by the name of Guyton/Guiton in the eastern part of France now known as Charente Maritime. This is the area north of Bordeaux and the River Gironde and includes the famous port and citadel of LaRochelle where Jean Guiton was mayor and leader of the council of war defending the Huguenot bastion against French royalist forces in 1628/29 in the desperate siege lasting 14 months before the town was eventually overcome.
One of the two lines was headed by Isaac de Guyton de Villeneuve who was born about 1630 and became a clerk and counsellor in the royal court and was later ennobled. After his elevation, he moved to LaRochelle but did not belong to the same branch of the family as Jean Guiton. Isaac de Guyton's eldest son, Isaac Guyton, was born about 1955 and married Marie Coulion. two of their children, Daniel Guyton and Samuel Guyton, were later recorded as leaving France as emigrants and refugees.
No trace has been found of Samuel Guyton but there is a record of the marriage of a Daniel Guiton in the register of the French Conformed Churches of St. Patrick and St Mary in Dublin, Ireland on December 16 1705.
"26 December 1705 Daniel Guiton, de Royan en Saintonge, marinier,....et Rachel Gacoing, de Vitre en Bretange,... le dit Guiton estant fils de Isaac Guiton et de Marie Coulion, et la ditte Rachel Gacoing, fille de Elie Gacoing et de Gilette Basin...."
I have no evidence but I feel reasonably sure that this in the line which gives rise to the scattering of the Guiton families in the middle of Ireland in the eighteen and nineteenth centuries. for example, there was a baptism of an Isaac Chevalier Guitton, son of Peter Guitton and Ann, on 30 November 1777 at Dundalk, County Louth, just north of Dublin. the names Isaac and Chevalier, meaning a knight, have clear echoes back to earlier members of the family in France. It is quite possible, therefore, that James Guyton did have rather distant connections with a line of minor French nobility.
Several Guiton with an Irish origin have been recorded in England but, as Ireland was part of the United Kingdom, there are no immigration records to check dates and places.
Your document implies the James Guiton immigrated in about 1849 when he was sixteen. Liverpool was the principal port of embarkation for America and people came from all over England and Ireland and elsewhere in Europe to set sail. At about that time a Michael Guiton/Guyton, born about 1831 and his wife Mary (formerly Maher), moved from Ireland to Liverpool. There were also two other Guytons, an Edward Guyton (whose wife's maiden name was also Maher) and a John Guyton, born about 1824 and 1830 respectively, in Liverpool at around that time or a little later that I have not been able to connect with the Guytons from Norwich. Any one of these could be the half brother mentioned in the document.
There was also another Guyton family living in Liverpool at the time but I am fairly sure that this family was connected to the Guyton's of Norwich, England, rather than Ireland. the head of the family, William Guyton, was a shipping agent and his oldest son, also William Guyton, travelled widely and lived for a time in Australia and New Zealand. Whether there is any connection here is hard to tell.
I also have an extract from a letter written by an American Guyton researcher, Berl Powell Guyton in 1987 when he was about 88;-
"I found a letter written by David Guyton from 41 Dirkson Crescent, Sockburn, Christchurch, New Zealand dated 6/19/64. He was born at sea near Galveston, Texas. His ancestors came from Normandie, France to South Carolina then to North Miss. in 1852. His forefather came to New Zealand, first in 1841 and became the first Lord Mayor of Wellington, New Zealand and the name of Guyton Scarat?? Wanganin North Island, New Zealand was named after my forefathers, he was born in Liverpool, England, and returned to England after a short stay of a year. He was the first person to run a shipping company from Nan Janin (?) Wellington. they have many records of the family in Liverpool....."
Berl Guyton's died in 1995 and one of my other correspondents has tried to track down the whereabouts of his papers, unfortunately so far without success.
We are left, therefore, with a number of intriguing glimpses but enough, I think to reinforce the outline given in your document.

( I think this is the record of his arrival but I do not have the proof of it yet
