Johann Adam Heckmann birth information was from the (1) Parochial registers of the Evangelical Incumbency of Rothenberg. Death was from (2) Berks Co. wills and administrations and related documents. Will Book 2, p. 332. It was written June 15, 1776 and was proved May 2, 1778. (3) General info, Giuseppi, M.S. Naturalizations of Foreign Protestants in the American and West.
Gemera: (1) and (3). With his wife and three young children Johann Adam Heckmann came to Pennsylvania on the "Brothers" arrived in Philadelphia ("from Rotterdam and last from Cowes in England") on September 22, 1752. On the same voyage with Adam were Nicklus Heckmann, Peter Hickman (sic) and several Edelmans, a family associated with Heckmanns in Rothenberg and later in the Red Hill congregation.

When the Lutheran congregation of St. Paul's in Red Hill, Upper Hanover twp. in the Goshenhoppen area of Montgomery Co. moved and built a new church in 1750, it was felt that part of the impetus for building was the 1749 arrival of ten families on the "Albany", among them Joh. Adam Heckman. Arrived September 2, 1749. John Adam probably came from Rottenberg, Germany where his son John George was born.

After spending his initial years in Montgomery Co., Adam removed to Berks Co. by 1761. On 22 March 1761 he was recorded as being of Alsace Twp. when he was naturalized in Philadelphia. On the 1767 Berks Co. tax list Adam Heckman is recorded in Alsace Twp. with 170 acres, 2 cattle and no horses or sheep. The 1768 tax record gives his acreage as 150 acres.

The Heckman/Heckmann name can be traced back to many, many parts of Germany. It was, and still, is a very common name. In 1996 there were about 4,300 Heckmanns in the German Telephone directory. However, there is one factor which sometimes helps to tell a little about the name. Those Heckmans who had ancestors coming to North America prior to 1800 usually have the single N at the end of the name, and those who came after 1800 are usually spelled with double NN. This isn't a hard and fast ruling but is usually works. Some who came after 1800 dropped the last N.
