C. Austin Miles, who composed 30,000 Hymns, dies at 78.

C. Austin Miles, writer of approximately 30,000 hyyms, including "In The Garden", died yesterday in Hahneman Hospital after a one year illness. He was 78.

A resident of 228 Wesley Ave. the Pitman Methodist Episcopal Church, a director of the Pitman Camp Meeting Association and graduate of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science.

Mr. Miles retired four years ago as a music editor of the Rodeheaver, Hall-Mack Co., 124 North 15th street, after 43s in the post. He severed his connection with the firm, publishers of religious songs, when it moved to Indiana.

"In The Garden" his most famous hymn, written in 1912. He sold it to the Hall-Mack Co. prior the the latter's purchase by Rodeheaver for $4. As far as he was concerned it was not a financial success, by was printed 3,000,000 times and the recordings topped the 1,000,000 mark.

The hymn has been sung in many languages throughout the world.

Born January 7, 1868, in Lakehurst, NJ., then known as Manchester, Mr. Miles got his first musical job there at thr age of 12, substituting at the organ at a funeral service.

At the instigation of an Aunt, he entered the Philadelphia College of Pharmancy and was graduaded in 1889. He practiced pharmacy for ten years in Camden, then gave it up for a full-time carerr of music.

During that time he continued writing hymns on the side and studying music at the University of Pennsylvania. His entrance into the professional song-writing world was made in 1898 2when he sold four hyms to Hall-Mack for $2.50 each.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha H. ; two sons, C. Austin, Jr. of Colingswood, and Russell H., professor of music at the University of Illinois and a daughter, Mrs. Charles A. Slifer, of Plainfield.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday at Wainwrites's Pitman, with burial in Hill Crest Cemetery there.

When he was 3, he was playing with the Walthers and put one of his eyes out. They took responsibility for it and sent him to privaste schools and became a son to them.

Eugene H. Haagen, 51, of 902 Salzedo St. Coral Gables, a retired Baltimore auto agency manager died ZThursday. He came here six years ago from Baltimore and is survived by his wife, Kathryn of Copral Gables and a brother in Philadelphia. Services will be at 11 AM Saturday in Van Orsdels Coral Gables chapel, with cremation to follow.
