GENEVA MAY Obituary
Funeral Services for Geneva May, 84, will be held in the Alva Wesleyan Church on September 30, 2000 at 2 p.m. with Reverend Lance Lenardes, Pastor and Reverend Ron Olson, Pastor of the Cedar Grove Wesleyan Church officiating.Interment follows in the Hardtner Cemetery, Hardtner, Kan.Wharton Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Geneva Matilda, daughter of Katherine Marie (Larsen) and Fredrick Carl Peterson was born near the Manchester area on June 18, 1916.She passed away at the Alva Share Medical Center on Sept. 28, 2000.
She attended several Woods County Rural Grade Schools and graduated from the Fairview Rural Grade School then worked for several neighbors and then attended the Wichita Beauty Academy.On Aug. 10, 1938 she and her sister, Christie opened the Power Puff Beauty Shop in Alva.
Miss Peterson was married to Clarence Wilbur May on Aug. 11, 1940 at the Cedar Grove Methodist Wesleyan Church.To their marriage two children, Joyce and Leon were born.
Following their marriage they lived in Alva and in 1942 moved to the farm northwest of Alva.They operated the farm together until Wilbur's death on December 14, 1963.Then she and her son Leon continued the ranching operation.In 1976 she retired and moved to Alva to make her home.
Geneva was a member of the Cedar Grove Wesleyan Church where she taught Sunday school for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Ida Margaret and Christie McDermott, three brothers, Anthon, John and Lee and a son-in-law O'Dale Bowen.
Geneva is survived by a daughter, Joyce Bowen of Medicine Lodge, Kan., a son and his wife Leon and Angie of Alva; six grandchildren, Tyler, Jason and Jerry May, O'Lynn Bowen, Tonya Dunham, Hec and his wife April Bowen, five great-grandchildren, O'Brian, Christina, Trishia, Chance and Dwight; a sister-in-law, Imogene Peterson of Freedom, a sister and her husband, Ida and Wesley Gum of Derby, Kan., a brother and his wife, Chris and Georgia Peterson of Ellensburg, Wash., four sisters-in-law, Ime Peterson of Freedom, Delilah Brady, Eva Bird and Mary Bush all of Alva, two brothers-in-law, Clarence McDermott of Dacoma and Hubert May of Denison, Kan.; two special caretakers, Ione Hada of Alva and Dorothy McNally of Hardtner, Kan.; a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Cedar Grove Wesleyan Church or the Alva Wesleyan Church.
