Notes for DAVID KINGSTON BRADFORD:
From the book "Mayflower Families in Progress, William Bradford of the Mayflower and His Descendants for Four Generations," compiled by Robert S Wakefield, FASG, Fourth Edition, Published by General Society of Mayflower Descendants 1994.
On I April 1730 Mrs. Elizabeth Bradford of Kingston was appointed administratix of the estate of her husband David Bradford late of Kingston deceased and in Sept. 1733 Samuel Foster of Kingston was appointed guardian to Nathaniel and Jonathan, both over 14, and Nathan, Lemuel and Lydia, all under 14, children of David Bradford late of Kingston decd. On 13 April 1742, ack. 26 April 1742, Elkanah Cushman of Plymouth mariner and wife Lydia sold their rights in land of David Bradford of Kingston deceased and of Jonathan Bradford of Plymouth deceased. On 9 Oct. 1746 Benjamin Ludden of Braintree and wife Elizabeth, who was widow of David Bradford late of Kingston, sold their rights to land of her late husband and of deceased (son) Jonathan and Lemuel Bradford. No Suffolk Co. PR or later Suffolk Co. LR for Benjamin or Elizabeth Ludden.        ____________________________________________________________________________________DAVID3 BRADFORD AND HIS WIFE
DAVID3 BRADFORD (William2-1) of Plymouth and Kingston, Mass., was married, on 23 February, 1713/14, to Elizabeth Finney. The marriage was recorded at Plymouth, and on the same page of the original records* we find the marriage of David's nephew, William4 Bradford (William3-2-1), on 18 November, 1722, to another Elizabeth Finney. Neither of these two records gives the residence of the bride or the names of her parents, and the statements about these marriages, in William T. Davis' "Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth", have misled many persons. On pages 31 and 110 of Part II, Davis states that David3 Bradford's wife, Elizabeth Finney, was the daughter of John and Mary (Rogers) Finney. In the appendix, on page 309, he mentions a claim that David3 Bradford's wife was the daughter of Josiah Finney, and, for proof that this claim is not correct, refers readers to his statement on page 327. On the latter page, in a statement about Josiah Finney, he wrote: "It has been thought by some that his d. Elizabeth m. Daniel‡ Bradford, and that Elizabeth, d. of John Finney, m. William Bradford. Aside from family tradition the marriages as stated in the text are confirmed by a deed recorded in the Plymouth County Registry, Book 22, page 70, under date of June 6, 1727, in which William Bradford and wife Elizabeth" and others "quit claim to their * Mayflower Descendant, 14:37. Boston, 1899, with appendix. So given by Davis. The name should have been "David". This error has added to the confusion. David3 Bradford and His Wife brothers, Josiah and John Finney, all their interest in the real estate of their honored father, Josiah Finney." This deed proves that it was Josiah Finney's daughter Elizabeth who married William4 Bradford; but it does not prove anything at all about the other Elizabeth Finney, who married David Bradford, although Davis claims that it proves "the marriages as stated in the text". To avoid misunderstanding it should here be stated that the Plymouth branch of the family spelled their name "Finney", but the Barnstable branch used the form "Phinney". In my article (in our twentieth volume) on the wills of John Phinney (who married Mary Rogers) and his son John Phinney, both of Barnstable, I showed that John and Mary (Rogers) Phinney had no daughter Elizabeth. It is, therefore, clear that David3 Bradford's wife could not have been a daughter of John Phinney, as claimed by Davis. In the present article I shall show that David3 Bradford (William2-1) married Elizabeth the daughter of Jonathan and Joanna Phinney of Swansea, Mass.; Elizabeth, therefore, was a niece of John and Mary (Rogers) Phinney. The will of Jonathan Phinney, of Swansea, dated 27 August, 1724, mentions "my Daughte Elizabeth Bradford"; and in the settlement of the estate of Jonathan's widow, Joanna Phinney, in an account allowed 17 November, 1741, we find a list showing "Each Childs portion in" the personal estate, and "Elisabeth Luden" received one share. These two apparently conflicting statements are explained by the fact that David3 Bradford was alive when Jonathan Phinney made his will; but Bradford died in 1729/30, and his widow, Elizabeth (Phinney) Bradford later married Benjamin Ludden, of Braintree, Mass., their intentions being published, at Kingston, Mass., 10 August, 1733.
The will of Jonathan Phinney and the settlement of his widows estate will be found in another article in this issue. David3 and Elizabeth (Phinney) Bradford had four children recorded at Plymouth, and one at Kingston*. They were: Nathaniel4 Bradford, born 10 December, 1715, died 27 March, 1751; Jonathan4 Bradford, born 13 November, 1717, died without issue before 13 April, 1742; Lydia4 Bradford, born 23 December, 1719, married, first, Elkanah Cushman5 (Elkanah4-3, Mary2 Allerton, Isaac1), married, second, Dr. Lazarus LeBaron, Nathan4 Bradford, born 3 April, 1722, died 14 October, 1787, Lemuel4
* Kingston was a part of Plymouth until 1726. David3 Bradford and His Wife Bradford, born 1 March, 1726/7, died without issue, before 9 October, 1742. David3 Bradford died intestate, at Kingston, on 16 March, 1729/30; his widow was appointed administratrix, on 1 April, 1730; and her intention of marriage to Benjamin Ludden was dated 10 August, 1733. The guardianship bonds, of the five children, dated 28 September, 1733, show that all were then living; but a deed from Elkanah and Lydia4 (Bradford) Cushman shows that her brother, Jonathan4 Bradford, died, without issue, before 13 April, 1 1742, the date of the deed. A deed from, Benjamin Ludden, of Braintree, and Elizabeth his wife, recorded at Plymouth, proves that Elizabeth was the widow of David Bradford, and that her son Lemuel4 Bradford had died, without issue, before 9 October, 1746, the date of the deed. We here print exhaustive abstracts of all records, and unrecorded documents on file, relating to the settlement of the estate of David3 Bradford, found in the Plymouth County, Mass., Probate Records; also exhaustive abstracts of the two deeds referred to, from Elkanah and Lydia Cushman, and from Benjamin and Elizabeth Ludden, both recorded at Plymouth. [DAVID3 BRADFORD'S ESTATE][Plym. Co. Prob., 5:664] On 1 April, 1730, "mrs Elizabeth Bradford of Kingston .... widow" was appointed administratrix on the estate of "your late Husband David Bradford late of Kingston .... Dyed Intestate" [From unrecorded bond] On 1 April, 1730, "Elisabeth Bradford," as administratrix, with Seth Chipman and Ephraim Bradford as sureties, all three of Kingston, gave a bond for £500. The witnesses were Samuel Foster and Benjamin Samson. [From original inventory] On 8 May, 1730, Francis Adams, Samuel Foster and Seth Chipman took the inventory. The real estate was "the house and land within fence on ye Easterly Side of The High way Exclusive of the Land of Ephrm Bradfords" £220; "a parcel of Land & Salt meadow Down by ye Crick" £90; "a parcel of Land to the westerly Side of the highway within Fence" £100; "a parcel of Wood Land adjoining with out fence" £138; "a parcel of Land Laying By Ephraim Bradford Home Stead Near Black water meadow" £40; "a parcel David3 Bradford and His Wife of Land above Isaac Holms Adjoining to Said holms Land" £40; "an Intrest in Black water Meadow" £5; "an Intrest in a parcell of Cedar Swamp by Black water Meadow" £5. "an intrest in Some Cedar Swamp att plimton", and "an intrest in Some Land att monument Ponds In plymouth near Jontn Moryes" were not valued. Elizabeth Bradford, administratrix, and the three appraisers, made oath to the inventory, 23 May, 1730. [Also recorded, 5:716.] [From unrecorded account] "The acount of Elisabeth Bradford administrator" was dated 28 September, 1733, but was not signed or acknowledged. Payments had been made to Seth Chipman; "Mr Sever"; "Mr Thomas Croade"; "Mr Jon Wattson"; to "the Doctors" £6, 7s.; "Mr Samson" James Cob; Ephraim Bradford; "Mr Addams"; Philip Chandler; paid for a tomb stone" £1, 5s. Debts were due the estate from Barnabas "Hath" "Mr Landman ; Gershom Bradford; Christopher Wadsworth; Eleazer Morton; Israel Bradford; Issacher Winslow; James Davis; Elizabeth Doten; "Mrs Shepard" Helkiah Tinkham; John Pratt; John Poland; Nicholas Davis; Deborah Drew; Ebenezer Morton; Abiah Wadsworth; Caleb Stetson. [GUARDIANSHIPS OF THE CHILDREN] The five children were minors when their mother's intention of marriage to Benjamin Ludden was entered, on 10 August, 1733; and in September, 1733, Samuel Foster, blacksmith, of Kingston, became their guardian. His appointment is recorded in the Plymouth County Probate Records, 6: 395 - 397. He was chosen guardian by Jonathan4 and Nathaniel4 Bradford, each above fourteen years of age, but the record of the first appointment is dated 8 September, and of the second, 28 September; and, according to the record, he was appointed guardian of Lemuel4 Bradford (under fourteen) on 28 September, and guardian of Nathan4 and Lydia4 Bradford (both under fourteen) on 8 September. As the bonds in all five cases were dated 28 September, 1733, it seems probable that all five appointments were made on that date, but that an error was made in recording. [From unrecorded bonds] On "the 28 day of September Anno Domini 1733" five bonds, of £200 each, were given by Samuel Foster, blacksmith, of Kingston, as guardian of Nathaniel Bradford and Jonathan Bradford, both over fourteen years of age, and of Lydia Bradford, Nathan Bradford and Lemuel Bradford, all three under fourteen years of age. Francis Adams of Kingston was the surety on each bond, and they were all witnessed by "Benj Samson" and "micah Sampson".
