 Includes NotesNotes for GEORGE CORMACK:
George was Chief Engineer on the s.s. "Sunning" in the north China Sea when in November 1926 the ship was overtaken by pirates. He was shot three times by the pirates, and to save him from further harm his cabin boy hid him in the coal bunker of the ship. After some time the pirates set fire to the ship starting the fire in the coal bunker. George was badly burned but managed to get out of the coal bunker and with the help of the Chief Officer of the ship recaptured the ship from the pirates. George was awarded a Member of the British Empire from King George V of England at a ceremony at the Court of St. James, and he was also awarded a citation and a gold watch and chain from the China government. Only two of the bullets were removed (the third being lodged in a place where removal would threaten his life further). I, his granddaughter Beverley Honeyman Hagen, am privileged to have one of the bullets that was removed from him and also the gold watch and chain and the citation and the certificate awarding him an M.B.E.
He, and his wife Mary Ferguson Cormack, lived with my family from about 1945 when my parents left England and my Dad, Fraser Honeyman, was stationed in Bombay India with the Royal Navy. George and Mary later moved to Durban, South Africa with my family (where Mary Cormack died) and then to Long Island, New York, U.S.A. with us where George died. He was a wonderful man and I loved him dearly.
