  • Mosel River and vineyards of Reil, Germany (36 KB)
This photo was taken from our guest room at the Richard Arns' "gasthaus" in Reil, Germany. Richard and his father, Rainer Arns, are the current proprietors of a winery dating back to the time of the Romans!
  • Marian Butzen Hommerding , Mt. Angel, Oregon 1911 (24 KB)
My great-grandmother, who came to Chicago from Reil, Germany in 1853. "Grandma Hommerding" came out from Chicago a few months before her daughter, Barbara, died in childbirth, and she remained with August Kemmerich and his children for the rest of her life. She passed away on March 25, 1912 at the age of 78.
  • August Kemmerich's Barn, ca. 1890 (31 KB)
August kept dairy cattle on his ranch at Birdsview and housed them in this barn. To understand the size of this structure, look at the milk can, just to the left of the barn doors. In front of the barn is a timber scales and a roller for compacting gravel roads.

August built this ranch house with the help of his uncle, Augustus Kemmerich. When the house was completed in 1883, Augustus and his wife moved to Mt. • "Anna Amerika" Goettsch about 1901 (25 KB)
Anna Goettsch was the aunt of Magdalena Goettsch Hinst. About 1893 she came to the USA from Schoenberg, Germany and lived with various relatives in Iowa, California and Idaho. She returned to Schoenberg in 1901, where she was known as "Anna Amerika." Very few emigrants ever returned to Germany! Letters from Anna, or about her estate led me to find living Goettsch relatives in Schoenberg in 2003.
