Notes for James Middleton: Per 1870, 1880, and 1900 census, lived in Precinct 5 (Moccasin). Elliott Co. Residence (at some point) on Little Caney Creek.
In Precinct 4 (Little Fork) was an Isaac Middleton/23, wife: Mary/23, son Peter/3, Nancy/6mos.
Part Irish. Raised 12 children of own and 2 orphans (one was Polly). During Civil War, Jimmie went for miles for food for his family and neighbors (women & children were afraid to go) by horse. One trip for groceries, the Home Guards shot him, but didn't kill him. He pretended to be dead, so they left him lying on the ground. Bullet went in one side and out the other. He was gone so long, his family thought he was dead. There weren't many doctors those days, so they slid a silk handkerchief through the wound. He finally got well. They raised most of the food they ate--sheep, cows, hogs, chickens, & geese. Barbary Ellen would pick geese feathers to make the beds. She would card the wool from the sheep into little roles then spin it into yarn, with which she made stockings & gloves for the family. Other yarn she wove into cloth for clothing & beds. She taught all of her children to read and write. Her dau. Polly had dau. out of wedlock. After Polly died, Jimmy & Barbary Ellen raised granddau. Barbara Ellen (Ellie).
