According to Carter Co. History 1838-1976, by Christine McGlone, Owen McGlone was the first settler in the area and first white man to build a home in this section of Buffalo Valley. Owen was known for his ability to track horse thieves. And his friends put him to the test, even putting horse shoes backwards on a horse, but he wasn't fooled.
The first school was built of logs in 1887 by the families who lived along the bank of McGlone Fork of Burralo Creek. Later they built a new building to serve as both school and church. McGlone Creek School is 42 by 24 feet, built of lumber from local poplar and oak trees, sawed by donation of James "Jim" Fultz' sawmill, on land given by Thomas Perry McGlone. It has two doors on each end to accomodate funerals. Among the peope involved in the project was James Wayman "Twid" McGlone, the father of Barbara Ellen (Ellie) Middleton and her half brother Francis M. (Blind Frank) McGlone. The building is still maintained and in use today.[v63t0354 McGlone Twid.ftw]
