In Roots in Virginia, p. 10, "In 1768, Lewis Hale, born in 1746, married Mary Burwell, descendant of an old and distinguished Virginia family. He and Mary sold their lands south of the Staunton at the mouth of the Blackwater River during 1778 and 1779. They then moved to the New River Valley and settled on Elk Creek. Louis Hale was a Revolutionary soldier in 1781 , was appointed a Justice of Montgomery County in 1786 and was one of the first Justices of Grayson County in 1792. He died in Grayson County in 1802.
