Descendants of John Pittman

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN1 PITTMAN was born Oct-03-1726, and died Apr-19-1785 in GA, Richmond Co. He married MARY "POLLY" ROWE 1747. She was born 1730 in VA, and died 1810 in GA, Columbia Co.

Notes for J
OHN PITTMAN:
Most of the information concerning the early Pittman line, though confirmed in many instances by census, marriage, and other records, is dependent upon the work of Lona Elrod and the Pittman Family Society of South Georgia. The young woman with whom I traded e-mail, a cousin of some degree I reckon, doesn't know what a favor she did for me when she responded to my posting at the Pittman mailing list of Roots-Web.
The fellow she noted as the start of our line was John Pittman. He married a woman by the name of Polly Rowe in Buckingham (Amelia) Co, VA, moving his family, probably sometime after 1756, first to the Edgefield District of South Carolina, then across the Savannah River to St. Paul's Parish (later Richmond and then Columbia Co) along the Kiokee Creek.
Lona Elrod has suggested that John's reasons for leaving Virginia might have been rooted in his devotion to his Baptist faith. During his time, the English monarchy, also the head of the Church of England, demanded tithes and obedience to Anglican doctrine. John Pittman may have chosen to leave the more settled climes of Virginia for more dangerous environs so that he might be free to practice his faith.
His decision was, perhaps, guided by other, more practical reasons as well. Certainly, much of American colonial history was a search for more land at a cheaper price.
John demonstrated his physical courage again when he joined in the revolution against King George and British rule. He returned to the Edgefield District of South Carolina to serve as a gunner in the 4th Artillery Regiment of that state.
Several of his sons served against the British also. Buckner would serve with George Rogers Clark and his forays against the British army and their native allies in the West. John Jr. served with the 2nd Battalion of the Georgia Militia and may also have seen service with a Virginia unit. His brother, James Green, served with a Georgia unit, and after the British overran Georgia, with the Virginia line. Though quite young at the time, Phillip Pittman is also said to have served in the Georgia militia, probably towards the end of the Revolution.
According to a family biography cited by Elrod, while the Pittman men served in the field, Polly Pittman attempted to defend their home against a ransacking group of Tories. In her effort, she was knocked from the porch and her hip broken. She would never fully recover from the injury. By the same account, only one of the raiders survived the war. Buckner Pittman allegedly shot him dead in the streets of Nashville sometime after the Revolution. If true, the story might explain why Buckner could be found in the new Mississippi territory just after 1800. Still, it's doubtful that an indictment would ever have been brought in the state that became home to another Revolutionary hero, Andrew Jackson.
For John, the years just after the Revolution must have brought some satisfaction. However, he did not have long to enjoy them. As many of his children moved south and west, he died in 1785. Elrod reports that he and Polly, who died in 1810, are probably buried in unmarked graves on the family lands along Kiokee Creek.
