CALLAHAN, SCOTT AND DAVIS FAMILIES
From the rolling, wooded hillso of Jackson County, Indiana came the families of Callahan, Davis, Scott, and George.They left shortly after the end of the Civil War and spent their first winter south of Sauk Centre.They survived that winter by living on rabbits, venison, rutabagas and a little flour.
This group included three children of James and Nancy Davis, early settlers in Indiana.Elizabeth Davis Scott Callahan had first been married to Samuel Scott in Jackson County, Indiana.Elizabeth and Samuel Scotthad three children:Peter Brison, Margaret Elizabeth and John Henricks.John came with his mother to Minnesota and Peter came by 1870, but Margaret stayed in Jackson County to marry and raise a family.Thomas Callahan, an early settler in Kentucky and Indiana, had six children with Hester, his first wife, and would have four children, James, Sylvester, George and Mary, with Elizabeth.
Another child of James and Nancy Davis was Irena Davis, who was married to William George.The third child was Levi B. Davis, who was married to Elizabeth Callahan, a daughter of Thomas and Hester Callahan.Silas and Pleasant Davis, who were nephews of Elizabeth, Irena and Levi B. Davis and sons of Samuel and Polly Davis, also came with this group.Levi M., Daniel and Emerson Davis, the other brothers of Silas and Pleasant, came to Minnesota within the following years.
Thomas Callahan's family was the first to take a homestead in the town of Grey Eagle.The family settled on the north shore of Birch Lake and lived there until Thomas died in 1873.Elizabeth married Alexander Young in 1877.Alexander Young had also moved to Todd County from Jackson County, Indiana. Elizabeth passed away in 1896 at the age of 71.
Peter Brison Scott brought his family to Grey Eagle by 1870.Peter had severved almost four years in the Civil War, with almost a year of the time as a prisoner of war in Confederate prisons.Peter served as postmaster of Grey Eagle.He was a charter member of the United Brethren Church in Grey Eagle, and was ordained to service as a minister in 1892.Peter married three times and had nine children.He died in 1922 at the age of 76.
William and Irena George settled in Hartford township.John Hendricks Scott first worked on their farm until homesteading land in 1871.Submitted by Kathy A. Lewis

Death of a Pioneer Citizen.
The sad duty evolves upon us this week to record the death of James Davis, Sr., of Owen township, whose spirit winged its flight to the world beyond on Monday, December 28th, 1874.Mr. Davis was one of the oldest citizens resident in Jackson county, as well as one of the best.He settled here in early life, and ever held a warm place in the affection of his friends and neighbors.He was an upright, moral, conscientious man, and ever actuated by a strong desire to do right in all things.He had passed the allotted time of three score and ten, and at last quietly, calmly and peacefully passed away at the age of about 78 years.His remains were deposited in the burial ground connected with the Guthrie Creek Meeting House on the Wednesday following his demise, in the presence of a large concourse of relatives and friends.
