Notes for Joseph Willis Coleman:
Joseph Willis Coleman married Annie (South) Murphy Coleman in 1900 in Madrid, New Mexico.He died in 1913 when his son Bill Coleman was 15.As a young man he ran the lift in a coal mine shaft at Madrid, New Mexico.While living in Madrid he was the first stage coach driver driving the route from Santa Fe east or west.He was known as "Buckskin Joe" (as a result of driving the stage in the winter he had frostbitten hands and feet)He was in the Civil War as a Union soldier and was involved in the "Sand Creek Massacre" in Colorado.He was a court interpreter in Lincoln, NM at one time (fluent in Spanish).Joe had a homestead in 1862 of 160 acres in New Mexico near Capitan.This property was later lost due to back taxes.He died in Sawtelle US Army Veterans Hospital in Los Angeles, California.He is buried in the Military cemetary there.
