Elijah Hamilton Sr. was born August 25, 1759 in Berwick, Maine to Gabriel Hamilton #2 (Gabriel#2/Gabriel#1/David Hamilton) and his 2nd wife Sarah Grant. Elijah Sr. first married on July 8, 1779 to Lydia Joy (B:1762-D: b/4 1785); after she died in Lyman, Maine, Elijah Sr. married Mary Gould on September 29, 1785. She was born about August 1756 in Maine and died in Cambridge, ME May 14, 1818 per gravestone information. By the 1810 U.S. Census, Elijah Sr. is living in Harmony, Somerset County, ME. From the History of Harmony: Among those who came as pioneers to Harmony may be mentioned also David Kimball, who made his settlement there more than 100 years ago, Isaac Hutchins, John Thurston, Nathaniel Parsons, Lemuel Baker, David Smith, Samuel Ham, ELIJAH HAMILTON, Stephen Clark, Elisha Tibbetts, John Gray, Robert Brown, Stephen Dore and others.

Elijah Sr bought Lot 3 of the fifth range in Harmony. This may be the parcel of land which in 2002 is located along Highway 150 going into Harmony. Along side his property is a 'stone wall' that use to be the old road to Athens, ME. Carson Road "T" intersects with highway 150 at this area. Farming the land in August 2002 was Derek Thomas. Another section of land that Elijah Sr. owned was in Ripley, ME. This is found off north of highway 154 'east' of Harmony. On this land are apple trees and a well that might have been on that property when Elijah lived there. It appears that this land was sold to one of Elijah Sr.'s sons Stephen (1805-1874)by 1837. Elijah Sr. died on April 13, 1837. The land information states Anna as Elijah Sr.'s wife. Nancy Leighton Watson was also known as Anna in various Watson family trees and it is then believed Elijah Sr. married the third time to Nancy Leighton Watson(B: November 16, 1770-June 25, 1852)in Cambridge, ME. A Nancy is found in the 1840 census and 1850 census as Nancy Hamilton and the only feasible Hamilton man of that area that would have been old enough to be married to her was Elijah Sr. Elijah Sr. whose wife Mary Gould died in 1818, shows up in the 1820 census with what appears to be another wife whose age matches closely to what Nancy was. Both Elijah Sr. and Nancy's gravesites are found in the Cambridge Gardens Cemetery in 2002. Elijah is buried with Mary Gould. Only a row or so away is Nancy buried as Nancy Watson next to the headstone of her first husband Jonathan Watson. This 'story' will be updated as additional information is found.

THE LINEAGE:

Elijah Jr/Elijah Sr/Gabriel#2/Gabriel#1/David Hamilton abt. 1620-1691. David's ancestors are documented in the Hamiltons of Waterborough by Samuel King Hamilton. The Royalty Hamiltons of Scotland that this book attachs the David Hamilton branch to is incorrect as several DNA tests from Male Descendants of David shows that this lineage is incorrect.

Elijah Jr. b: September 19, 1788 d: 1837 married Hannah Doore of Athens. It is unclear as to when Elijah Jr. died but one researcher in 2001 stated "he died in Ohio or lower Michigan in a railroad accident". In 2004 this was updated via information received from BARZILLA Hamilton researchers to 'he died of typhoid fever from 1841-1844. He had traveled to the Mighigan-Ohio border with son Barzilla and became sick and died. Elijah Jr. had a sister Mary Hamilton Clark who was married to Elijah Clark and they lived in Maumee, Ohio and as Nov. 2009 research finds this area within 20 miles of the Michigan/Ohio border which potentially lends to thinking that Elijah and his son Barzilla could have been there visiting the Elijah Clark family. Barzilla returned to Maine following this incident. We do know Hannah Dore Hamilton is the head of the household in 1840 in Cambridge, ME. 1850 she can not be found; 1860 she is in Augusta ME with daughter Lydia Boynton; 1870 in Omro, WI with son James Hamilton and his 2nd wife Mehitable Jane Young who was originally from Greenville, ME; in 1880 she can not be found in any cens

  • Gravestone of Sarah Elizabeth Hamilton 1839-1922 (84 KB)
Sarah married Geo F. in Maine in 1858; after his death it appears she must have moved to Oregon to live probably with one of her children where she died. Her body was returned to WI and buried next to her husband in King, WI at the WI Vet. Home cemetery. The 1920 Census in Oregon finds Sarah with another last name so it appears she re-married but was a widow again as she lived with one of her children
  • Gravestone of James S. Hamilton 1814-1887 (20 KB)
James is buried in Omro (WI) Cemetery which is south of Omro out in the country. An etching of this headstone was taken as the wording is not visible to be read. Mehitable paid an 'upkeep' fee on this grave site until her death October 1925. Records show that James bought 4 buriel plots and although no headstones appear on two other plots it is believed that Hannah Dore Hamilton, James' mom is buried in one area and a Sumner Hamilton in the other. The records state "Mrs. James Hamilton" but it is known that Emilene died in Maine before James came to Omro.

  • WHO are Hannah Doore's PARENTS..... (3 KB)
AND the ANSWER is in MARCH as OF 2004: JOSEPH and PATIENCE HUSSEY DORE. In 1816 in a RIPLEY Elijah Hamilton JR. Family town record it says Elijah married Hannah Dore whose parents WERE JOSEPH and PATIENCE DORE. Indeed it was in Lyman that Joseph Door married Patience Hussey which is: In Lyman that Joseph Door married Patience Hussey; married by Rev Isaac Hasey 16 Apr 1775. Town Records 1: Town Records of Births/Marriages, page 118. THUS the information found in the ATHENS, MAINE HISTORY is incorrect where it says: The first member of the Dore family to come to Athens was Joseph b. 1749. His wife was Phoebe Lord, b. 1750. He settled in the northeast part of the town. Their children were: Samuel, John, Phoebe, Lydia, Betsey, and Hannah. Hannah Dore Hamilton's death information registered in Haverhill, Maine states her parents were Joseph and Patience Dore.

Sumner Hamilton has been very difficult to track. IN 2002 I received a typed copy of the partial diary of Samuel Hart Hamilton B: 8-7-1837 in Somerset or Piscataquis Co Maine and died in about 1919 in Todd Co. Minnesota. In these diaries, Samuel states that "Sumner was a physician and died 'making a blast' while in Connecticut". Sumner does not show up in any censuses. Could he have died between 1830-1840. Could he be the Sumner Hamilton married to a Caroline Noble of Connecticut BUT she was born in 1803 so would have been 14 years older. This Caroline married in 1844 a Charles Potter.
