My Great Great Grandfather, Henry Hammell and his family immigrated to Canada in 1833.Family tradition has him coming from County Cavan in Ireland. He died at sea, or shortly after arriving in Canada, place unknown, but likely in Ontario, Canada, in 1833. No direct indication of his age. His wife's name was Isabella (possibly Margaret) Shaw, no direct indication of age, except that they had a son, George Hammell, b. October 3, 1832, in Ireland. No indication of place of marriage but again, likely in Ireland. The Hammell family met another passenger on board, Roderick Graham also enroute to Canada.Shortly after Henry died, Roderick Graham supported the widow and children and subsequently married Isabella and raised George as a Graham. There is suggestion that there was another child but we have no information in that area.Isabella and Roderick Graham subsequently has at least 2 children together. Isabella Shaw and her son George were living together between 1851 Census and 1871 (Hamel, spelling), when she disappeared.George married Mary Johnston on April 8, 1874, place in Canada unknown but likely near Essonville, Ontario. We have a fairly complete list of decendants from George's marriage in 1874 to present. My focus, is to establish the Irish link to County Cavan, or other Irish county, if it exists, and further back in Ireland or perhaps back to Scotland. As I never met my Grandfather or Great Uncles, with one exception, the only common "thread", other than their connection to the Province of Ontario for many years, 1833 to about 1940, is their membership in the Orange Lodge in Essonville, Ontario (near Haliburton) and later, in Evesham, Saskatchewan, where they homesteaded nearby at Senlac, Saskatchewan, just after the turn of the century. Any information or hints would be appreciated. |
