FOURTH GENERATION

163. John Jefferson BROWN was born on 8 Mar 1851 in Tazewell Co., Virginia. He died on 27 Sep 1909 in Guthrie Co. IA. Was a harness maker in Stuart, IA. John died of Addison disease. J.J. Brown lived in Stuart IA ever since the town was founded and established the first harness shop there. He was afterward employed in the machine shops and as a fireman on the railroad but finally opened up another harness shop in Stuart. He was an active member of the Methodist Church, belonged to all the branches of the Odd Fellows and to the Masons and was captain of the Canton No. 37 at the time of his death. J.J. Brown was apparently a very well respected member of the community.

He was married to Alice BARRINGER (daughter of William R. BARRINGER and MARTHA ANN) on 5 Oct 1872. Alice BARRINGER was born in 1856. She died in 1943. John Jefferson BROWN and Alice BARRINGER had the following children:

554 ii. William C. BROWN⁽¹²⁾ was born in 1874 in Guthrie Co. IA. He died in 1928. Never Married. William was paralyzed and confined to a wheel chair the result of an accident while performing a circus stunt. It is not quite clear as to whether he was a member of the circus or did it on a dare, but his back was injured while diving from a high tower into a small barrel or tub of water. A member of J.J. Brown's family related that Will Brown later sold a patent medicine called "Valactone" which he described as nothing more than a very good laxative..
