| My research is basically centered in Pike County Mississippi. These are African American families. Perry and Susie Handy were listed on the 1900 Pike County Census. They are the parents of Rev.Ira Handy, my grandfather. Recent information that I have received states that Ira was born in Wesson, located in Lincoln County. Susie's surname was Otis. Sometime between 1885 and 1900, Perry and his family migrated to Pike County. According to Pike County Census Records they lived in the Magnolia/Osyka area of Pike County. Rev. Ira was a Baptist minister and married Fannie Varnado. Fannie is believed to be from Louisiana. The Friendly Five, a gospel quartet in the 1940's and 1950's,consisted of brothers from this Handy family. The Ellzey family is from the Rosehill area. Levy Ellzey was born in 1850 in Mississippi. One of his sons,Haze Levi,is my grandfather. Haze is reported to have been part Creek Indian. He was married twice, first to Hannah Collins and then to Carrie Ashley. Carrie later married Sil Martin from Amite County. I am also researching the Martin and McCray families of Amite County Mississippi. These are large families and I have a large amount of information about them. They are from the Rose Bower area of Amite County. The George Martin family has been in Amite County since the early 1800's. George married Candis Ashley and they had several children. The McCray family is believed to have migrated to this area from Copiah County. Rev. Sam McCray married Ella Johnson, and they had several children also. If anyone has information relating to the families feel free to contact me. If you find any mistakes please make me aware of them so that they may be corrected. Thanks for visiting my site and come back often. |
