The Hanken family come from Ost Friesland Germany; it does not appear on any current map as it is a place of origin rather than a political area. The location is in the far north of Germany, east of the Netherlands and south-west of Denmark right along the North Sea. The first Hanken family came to America about 1856 and initially settled around Dixon, Illinois.Later they moved to Jones county, Iowa and bought three ajoining 80 acre tracts outside of Monticello, Iowa.
