* Leslie Kirk Edwards - ancestry*

Updated November 6, 2007

Leslie Kirk Edwards was born in 1900 at Honeywood, Carshalton, Surrey, UK. Honeywood is a large country house which was sold by Leslie's mother to Carshalton Council around 1939. It is now the Sutton, Surrey Heritage Centre.

Leslie married my mother in 1940 and I was born in 1941 as Alan Edwards. My surname is different as my mother remarried when I was a child. My mother refused to tell me anything about Leslie and I only saw a photo of him in 1985 having asked an ancestry company to find him. However, he died in 1965.

Sutton Guardian covers Carshalton and has a reader blog facility. I wrote an account of my life and included the request for readers to contact me. The result of that is I am in contact with second-cousins, have photos of many of my ancestors and their relatives, and feel connected to father and grandmother.

More to the point, however is the newly-acquired sense of belonging to a family. My mother's family was dysfuntional and she died in 1999. Her sister was 90 this year and lives miles away. My younger half-brother died twenty years ago and my half-sister lives miles further than my aunt. There has never been any family unity. Contrast all that with my cousins and their families. It feels as if we have known each other for years.
